To view a film is to see another's seeing mediated by the technology and techniques of the camera. By manipulating the cinematic apparatus in unorthodox ways, avant-garde filmmakers challenge the standardized versions of seeing perpetuated by the dominant film industry and generate ways of seeing that are truer to actual human vision. Beginning with the proposition that the images of cinema and vision derive from the same basic elements--light, movement, and time--Wees argues that cinematic apparatus and human visual apparatus have significant properties in common. For that reason they can be brought into a dynamic, creative relationship which the author calls the dialectic of eye and camera. The consequences of this relationship are what Wees explores. Although previous studies have recognized the visual bias of avant-garde film, this is the first to place the visual aesthetics of avant-garde film in a long-standing, multidisciplinary discourse on vision, visuality, and art. What if I told you that no human died in the great flood? Would that change the story a bit? What about that story where God asked his friend Abraham to sacrifice his son? Why do I ask these questions about the Bible? Because these questions need to be answered if I am to believe a God of love authored this book. If you want to join me on this journey, you won't look at God or the Bible the same again. And yes, there are aliens in here too.

Lessons in Perception seeks to clarify notoriously elusive themes of the avant-garde with the use of existing research from the field of psychology. There is a long-standing history of reference to psychological concepts in relation to avant-garde film, such as its unique relationship to memory, visual perception, narrative comprehension, and synesthesia. Yet direct analysis of these topics in light of existing psychological research remains largely unexplored until now. More broadly, the aim of the book is to frame avant-garde filmmaking practice as a form of "practical psychology." In doing so, two principal arguments are proposed: first, that many avant-garde filmmakers draw creative inspiration from their own cognitive and perceptual capacities, and touch on topics explored by actual psychologists; secondly, that as practical psychologists, avant-garde filmmakers provide "lessons in perception" that offer psychological experiences that are largely unrehearsed in commercial cinema

This book explores the use of waves on strings and sound waves to illustrate the behaviour of waves. It shows how Albert Einstein overturned Newtonian physics and predicted startling new effects such as time dilation and length contraction for objects travelling at close to the speed of light.
