Abstract: A reference text by lipid researchers describes 8 methodological areas of lipid research, combining a background concerning the development and applications of methods in each area with a fairly detailed methodology. Theareas of lipid research for which methods are described include lipid and lipoprotein analysis, lipid absorption, and some of the lipid and lipoprotein metabolizing enzymes. Specific topics include: the analysis of cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, and other lipids in tissues; the positional analysis of fatty acids on glycerolipids; analysis of plasma lipoproteins; preparative lipoprotein fractionation methods; measurements of lipid absorption and lipoprotein synthesis in clinical and experimental settings;and the analysis of important lipid enzymes, covering cholesterol synthesis and degradation, fatty acid synthesis, and heparin-releaseable triacylglycerol lipases. This is the fourth volume of an occasional series of review volumes dealing with aspects of lipid methodology. As with the first three volumes, topics have been selected that have been developing rapidly in recent years and have some importance to lipid analysis. The authors are all leading international experts.Topics covered include: analysis of plant lipoxygenase metabolites, preparative high-performance liquid chromatography of lipids, structural analysis of fatty acids, and analysis of stable isotopes in lipids, among others.

Advances in Lipid Research, Volume 18 is a seven-chapter text that brings together significant research studies on atherosclerosis. The opening chapter describes the pathological techniques in atherosclerosis research. The succeeding chapters deal with the influence of lipid-lowering drugs on bile acid metabolism and the cholesterol metabolism in ovarian tissue. Other chapters examine the principal role of sulfolipids and the influence of dietary linoleic acids on blood pressure regulation in rats. The closing chapters review the influence of nonnutritive fiber on lipid metabolism and the influence of fiber on lipid-associated diseases. These chapters also consider the techniques for polar lipid analysis. This book will be of great value to lipid chemists, biochemists, and researchers.

Since the early 1930's the field of lipid research has grown tremendously. In conjunction with the expansion of our knowledge of lipids, many methods for the determination of these constituents have been published at a pace which makes it difficult for the investigator to keep abreast of developments. This bibliography was compiled in order that references to the many methods might be brought together and made more readily available. No effort has been made to include papers wherein the method of choice is "standard" or only slightly modified, or those referred to in the "New Methods" section of the Journal of Lipid Research. Of the methods published before 1930, only the classical ones have been included. The papers are listed alphabetically by first author. Chemical Abstract numbers are included for the less common journals.

This book can be considered one of the classics in the field of lipid research and it is especially necessary in the lipidomics era, characterized by a renewed interest in the role of lipids in many cellular processes and in particular, metabolic diseases such as obesity, atherosclerosis, stroke, hypertension and diabetes.About the 3rd edition:The overall format and organization of the third edition is similar to that of the second edition, but has been considerably extended in scope and coverage. Comprehensive lists of figures, tables and equations have been added for the convenience of the reader. Finally, the book has been typeset on pages that are 35% larger than those of earlier editions. We trust that this revised edition will be useful to a wide group of experienced researchers and scientists in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry and medical science. Progress in Lipid Research, Volume 18 focuses on the advancements of processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in lipid research. The selection first elaborates on lipid composition of marine and estuarine invertebrates; role of acylcoenzyme A: cholesterol O-acyltransferase in cholesterol metabolism; and synthesis of acyl lipids in plant tissues. Discussions focus on fatty acid synthesis, turnover of complex lipids, arterial wall and atherosclerosis, cholesteryl ester metabolism, and solubilization. The text then examines the effects of ethanol ingestion on lipid metabolism, including fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis, lipid peroxidation, plasma triacylglycerols and lipoproteins, phospholipid metabolism, and cholesterol and bile acids. The publication takes a look at lipid metabolism in liver and selected tissues and in the whole body of ruminant animals and the effect of caval shunts on lipid metabolism. Topics include adaptation and regulation of lipid metabolism in the whole animal, lipid metabolism in specific tissues, and the effects of caval shunts on tissue lipids. The text also ponders on lipid metabolism in the neonatal ruminant, as well as transfer of lipids across the placenta, maternal contribution to fetal lipid requirements, and placental lipid metabolism. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in lipid research.
