Excerpt from List of Works for the Study of Hispanic-American History Spanish and local, and based upon them, there has appeared a long list of scholarly publications, marked by rigorous method and sound judgment. In the United States there has been a steadily increasing interest in Hispanic - American history since 1898 and the last five years in particular have witnessed an extraordinary development in teaching and investigation in the field. The first desideratum of the serious stu dent in any subject is some sort of biblio graphical guide. NO one has undertaken work in the field of Hispanic - American history without feeling the handicap which the lack of such a guide imposes upon him, for it has been necessary for each investi gator to build up, from the beginning, his bibliographical apparatus. It is to meet this need, to provide, if not a complete bibliography, at least a list which may serve as a basis for an eventual definitive work, that the present work has been com piled. Excerpt from Some Imperative Needs for the Study of Hispanic, American History in Our Schools and Colleges The history of Spain in America, then, from 1492 until 1609 is that of the expansion of certain European peoples (spaniards to be sure but Europeans just the same) in the region extending from Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile on the south to Santa Fe and St. Augustine on the north a record for the establishment of empire and dominion that has not an equal in the history of the world and therefore deserving of full treatment in the narrative of the develop ment and spread of western civilization in general. Excerpt from Guide to Latin-American History Most of the purposes of this handbook are obvious. It is intended primarily to furnish a means of access to the various aspects of development of those states which are collectively termed Latin America. Until lately little attempt has been made to study the evolution and international importance of our southern neighbors, as the paucity of comprehensive works on Hispanic America witnesses. Only with the increasing com mercial importance of these states have we become aware of the existence of a number of large and potentially wealthy and pow erful nations at our very door; and it must be confessed that as the origin of this interest was commercial, the basis of our concern continues to be primarily economic. Hence, we have been studying latin-american social and cultural development largely for the purpose of understanding latin-american busi ness methods and opportunities. We are coming to realize, however, that these southern te publics have more to offer than mere opportunities for commer cial and financial exploitation. It becomes increasingly evident that here are great nations in the making, having their own distinct types of institutions and culture, their own likes and dislikes, and, withal, a growing consciousness of self-depend ence and strength which makes them constantly more worthy of consideration as friends or foes. In a careful, sympathetic study of these budding nations we have the true germs of genuine pan-americanism. Only by thorough mutual understanding can all the nations of the western hemisphere develop a spirit of international coopera tion based no longer on diplomatic expression of good will, but upon the recognition of common aims and interests toward'the promotion of the common welfare. Excerpt from Hispanic American Bibliographies: Including Collective Biographies, Histories of Literature and Selected General Works It is the compiler's intention to publish from time to time in the hispanic american historical review supplementary lists of bio bibliographical contributions to include current publications and also those that may not have been recorded in the present list. However, in this note to the special reprint edition it seems desirable to note the more important titles that have accumulated since the last part of the list was sent to the printer. By a regrettable oversight, Dr. Charles Carroll Marden's Notes for a bibliography of American Spanish (studies in honor of A. Marshall Elliott, Baltimore, Johns Hopkins press, 1911, p. 267 - 292) was omitted. This work, while modestly denominated Notes by the scholarly author, is in reality a comprehensive repertory of the literature of the subject prepared by one who is himself a specialist in the field. Dr. Marden is preparing a second edition in which he will incorporate the numerous contributions to the literature of the subject which have appeared Since 1911. Of the series of Hispanic American biographical repertories prepared by William Belmont Parker under the auspices of the Hispanic Society of America, the following are to be noted in addition to the two included in the list: Bolivians of to-day, New York, 1920 (xiv, 319 p.) Chileans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xix, 633 p.) Paraguayans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xv, 315 Peruvians of to-day, Lima, 1919 (xix, 616 This series of works forms a rather comprehensive and exceedingly valuable Who's Who of Hispanic America.
