I've seen people express their dislike about this, which I can understand, but at the same time, that is Jo's choice. It's not like Louisa May Alcott was forced by anyone to have a Jo teach boys only. This is also another case of how those people see themselves in Jo. There's nothing wrong with relating to her and using her as a self-insert, yet failing to understand her because you can see how Jo relates more to boys and has an easier time communicating with them. I don't think Jo has any female friends outside of her family. plus Jo says this herself who believe is Nat, in one chapter of Little Men when they talk. The two things she loves are books and boys. Does that make Jo a misogynist for not including girls? No. She just happens to have an easier connection with boys same as she feels a connection to books".

"If she had seen his face when, safe in his own room, he looked at the picture of a severe and rigid young lady, with a good deal of hair, who appeared to be gazing darkly in futurity, it might have thrown some light upon the subject, especially when he turned off the gas, and kissed the picture in the dark." - Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott Emily and Niina are here to discuss Jo's and Friedrich's relationship in Little Women. Emily and I combined our powers and had an in-depth chat about Laurie Lawrence, his character arc and the lack of it in every-single-little-women adaptation. In the novel, Laurie starts out as a very idle and sometimes pretty misogynistic figure and it is thanks to Amy he becomes a better person, but these elements of him are not in the adaptations. One of the most downloaded episodes of the Little Women Podcast, 150 Year Laurie problem, makes a deep dive into Laurie's character and compares the book's narrative to the several Little Women adaptations, which consistantly keep erasing his character arc. Emily and I combined our powers once again to discuss Jo's and Friedrich's relationships and Louisa May Alcott's attraction toward intelligence. When Friedrich gives feedback to Jo, Jo appreciates it, because she wants to develop as a writer. Friedrich Bhaer is based on philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Louisa was in love with him and he appears in literal disguise in all of her novels. He is also based on Alcott's favourite writer, the German poet Goethe. Unlike Greta Gerwig that lies to millions of people, Jo and Friedrich never argue in the book, and Friedrich is the one who helps her to become a writer. He literally gives the same advice to Jo, as Goethe inspired LMA to improve as a writer. Laurie is partially based on Alcott's ex, Laddie Wisniewski, and her friend Alf Whitman. She had a maternal relationship with both of these men who were younger than she. One of the goals of the Little Women podcast is to examine these relationships, and how (several) Little Women adaptations ignore their significance. It might come as a surprise to some people but there are actually quite a few sex scenes in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In this episode, we shall dive into 19th-century courtship and how Alcott writes about courtship etiquette. Laurie is based on Alcott's ex and Friedrich to a man she wanted to marry. In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection. Please notice that this is a short-form book, based on a podcast episode. Join me on a journey to study Amy March and her real-life inspiration May Alcott Nieriker. The misconceptions about Jo´s insecurities and especially about her looks. Society likes to put two characters against one another but is this true to reality? Find out that and more in the Little Women podcast. People often praise Jo for being a tomboy and how she rejects femininity, but Jo´s idealization of the masculine has very toxic elements. Amy is a character who is more governed by her brain, whereas Jo is in fact governed by her emotions, which is considered a feminine trait. In the novel, Jo struggles to show her feelings because she considers that weak and "feminine". When their father is wounded in the war she shouts to her sisters not to cry. A couple of years later Laurie says that she doesn't show emotions and calls her out about it. Because Jo tries to shut down an important human part of herself, simply because she considers it feminine, is actually something that slowly eats her inside and contributes to her loneliness. This is why the umbrella chapter is so important because Friedrich says to Jo that it is okay to be vulnerable. Amy does the opposite. She considers rational marriage with Fred Vaughn because it allows her to secure her family´s financial future. When Laurie reminds Amy that she is her mother´s daughter, and she simultaneously inspires Laurie to become a productive member of society, Amy allows herself to listen to her heart and her own feelings and allowing herself to become more open and it is this inner work that the couples do in Little Women, that makes these relationships work. Unfortunately, the adaptations rarely pay any attention to this. There are people who have not read the novel, have only seen the films, and don´t understand why the couples end up together. This is because the adaptations, never bother to show what actually happens between these people in the novel. Maybe Louisa was more of a romantic than people sometimes give her credit for. After reading about Louisa´s relationships with the real-life Friedrich and Laurie I´d say she definitely was. Louisa was a transcendentalist and one of the methods that the transcendentalists used was so-called self-scanning, which basically means trying to understand and analyze the feelings and the experiences that you are going through. Louisa practised this throughout her life, and she put lots of consideration into the true meaning of love. When Louisa grew most marriages that she saw were unhappy marriages because they were arranged marriages. Louisa herself answers this question about equality within marriage rather beautifully and her own wishes for marriage seem to have remained the same throughout her life. “You have given your idol a heart, but no head. … I would have her humble, though self-reliant, gentle, though strong; man’s companion, not his plaything; able and willing to face storms, as well as sun, shines, and share life’s burdens, as they come. Let me advise you to take head as a pilot, for you may find, as I have done, that the voyage of life is not quite a pleasant trip” “I would not be above you as I now am, nor yet below, like poor Amelia in the garden. But here is where every woman should be, at her husband’s side, walking together through life’s light and shadow". Here she is actually echoing both Amy and Jo, in matters of the heart one should combine both head and the feelings.

There are great deal of similarities between the arcs of Laurie in Little Women and Goethe's "sorrows of young werther." Both stories follow a young man's journey from innocence to experience and disillusionment, but the endings are vastly different. In this book we compare and contrast the two arcs to see which is more tragic. One of Louisa May Alcott´s favourite writers was the German poet Goethe and Laurie´s character arc in Little Women is surprisingly similar to Goethe´s young hero, Werther. Starting from the observation of the ubiquity of fan podcasts engaging in media commentary, this book explores three fan podcast genres in which commentary manifests as a structuring form: rewatch and reread podcasts, recap podcasts, and review podcasts. The author conducts a formalist genre analysis of these podcasts, close reading nine case studies to describe how the three genres function and how different fan labour manifests in podcasting. Each case study teases out the themes, style, and formal constellations of the three podcast genres, shows how different fans activate the affordances of podcasting and commentary, and reveals the distinct generic functions of the three podcast genres. This book will be of significant interest to scholars and students in podcast studies, fan studies, cultural studies and literary studies who are interested in fan podcasts, podcast genre analysis, and ways of close reading podcasts as texts.
