Working at Philipp's 66 Gas Station across the grey cracked Newberry Indian Stadium, one saw a lot. In this book, Doc is me. I use the amalgam of Banned for a certain character in The Dark Knight. For our city, there was no Dark Night, or no Super Being to save us, only a black night of the soul. In this book I try to recollect the past of 72-82, my crusades, my fights, fears and loss. I have tried when in doubt to leave or change names about this jungle of nature. If you find yourself in the book, it is by fault and you should contact me to get a taste of the profits. Now to our story, our time, when we always tried to call or find a Dark Night in Newberry. This book also contains banned material I submitted to Major Publishers without successes. Why am I writing this 30 years gone by and most of the people in the story, I have never heard from since '82. They are statues in my Hall of Fame, they are legends, they are precious to me. As I try to re-create life, it kills me slowly. It sheds layers of my soul to you. Please handle this book with care and the ones who love you as well. Never forget them, never let the past leave you behind. I love you for even taking your precious time to try to follow me on this hell of a journey. Let the Dark Night find me once before it is too late! Author's Note: The thunder I hear is nothing to the storm coming, then and now. We were young, naïve, high and without a guide. Parents were well AWOL. This is not one of those I feel sorry for myself books. But if you don't cry, laugh, smile or love Newberry more or less, then I need to find a new soul, a new way. We all wanted to get out of Newberry, but Newberry won't let us be. The Dark Night looks upon us still and lets see what we might be. (Doc Banned Cole) July 24, 2012 I don't do Table of Contents, Newberry's No Show on a Dark Night Would Not Allow Doc to do it!

The dead of night The Old West town of Lily, Arizona, is home to the Gilded Lily, a former theater…and bawdy house. These days, it offers theatrical productions geared to tourists, but the recent discovery of a skull, a real skull, among the props and costumes shakes everyone up. So, who do you call? The Krewe of Hunters, a special FBI unit of paranormal investigators. In this case, it's agent Jane Everett. Jane's also a talented artist who creates images of the dead as they once were. But the Krewe always works with local law enforcement, and here that means Sloan Trent, former Houston cop and now sheriff. His great-great-grandmother was an actress at the Gilded Lily…and she's not resting in peace. Then more remains appear in the nearby desert. As they search for answers, using all the skills at their disposal, Jane and Sloan find themselves falling into danger—and into love.

Covering the works of Canadian authors Alistair Macleod, Michael Ondaatje, Jane Urquhart, Margaret Atwood and Drew Hayden Taylor, the author explores how the themes of memory, storytelling and identity develop in their fiction. For the narrative voices in these works, the past is embedded in the present and a wider cultural history is written over with personal significance. The act of storytelling shapes the characters’ lives, letting them rewrite the past and be haunted by it. Storytelling becomes an existential act of everyday connection among ordinary people and daily (often unrecognized) acts of heroism.
