This 1935 collection of Ellen G. White's admonitions is reprinted in the hope of arousing God's people to follow the divine blueprint of the medical work. The content of this book is briefly summarized in these two statements: "Loma Linda is to be not only a sanitarium, but an educational center. With the possession of this place comes the mighty responsibility of making the work of the institution educational in character. The school that is to be established at Loma Linda is to stand in the freedom of the truth." "Shall we represent before the world that our physicians must follow the pattern of the world, before they can be qualified to be successful physicians? This is the question that is now testing the faith of some of our brethren. Let not any of our brethren displease the Lord by advocating in their assemblies the idea that we need to obtain from unbelievers a higher education that that specified by the Lord."

Some 300 articles, letters, and committee reports regarding the founding of Loma Linda as a training center for health workers is included in this unabridged edition of the original compilation by Elder John A. Burden. He originally named it “LOMA LINDA MESSAGES Divine Instruction the 'Blue Print' Thru [sic] the Inspired Pen of Ellen G. White.” The original, and this present edition, consists of about two-thirds (by word count), of articles, sermons, and letters by E. G. White. But, unlike the Ellen G. White CD-ROM, and some printed editions, the original and this present edition contain another one-third by word count of letters by some twenty different authors and various committee discussions and reports. Thus, we can follow more clearly the ebb and flow between the counsels of the Lord through Ellen White and the various church leaders and committees of God's church; from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to the local Southern California Conference and the North American Union ConferencesWhile the members in southern California were struggling to get two recently opened sanitariums, one in San Diego and the other in Glendale, up and operating well, the counsel from the Lord in 1905 was that they were to look for a third site in the Redlands and Riverside area.Though financially strapped, led by Elder Burden, the brethren revisited a property near Redlands called Loma Linda with 76 acres and an empty sanitarium originally built at an investment of $155,000.00. When visited in 1904 it had been available for $110,000.00 which was far out of the reach of our struggling church. When revisited in 1905, the desperate investors had lowered the price to $85,000 and later in the year to $45,000. Finally, in May of 1905, with lack of support from the church organization, but with the urging of Ellen White, Brother Burden personally paid $1,000 for an option to purchase the property for $40,000. This action of Burden created great anxiety in the church leadership. In the contract, $5,000 was due in about two months. On the day the note was due, the Southern California Conference had no money to meet it. Four hours before the time was up, a letter arrived by overland mail from an unknown individual on the East coast. It contained a money draft for the exact amount needed. The option was saved and the Lord continued to bless in the raising of funds to complete the purchase of Loma Linda in less than six months rather than the four years allowed in the contract. The Lord was clearly leading. Ellen White, on visiting Loma Linda, confirmed that it was the property she had seen in vision back in 1901.This compilation by Elder Burden is an interesting record of the counsels given and of the struggles that leaders had, on all levels of the organization, as to how to implement the instructions sent them by God. This is a thrilling saga of faith challenged and faith rewarded. It is a confirmation that success in doing the Lord's work depends upon obedience to the directives given, and not upon human wisdom. Each reader will be encouraged in their trust of the counsels of the Lord through His servant messenger Ellen G. White.List of Contributors:Ellen G. White; Elder John A. Burden; Dr. George K. One extremely helpful remedy of the past, described in this volume, was the use of charcoal in the treatment of bloody dysentery, probably as a complication of then common typhoid fever. Charcoal is generally beneficial in all forms of stomach and bowel upset. Its use at present should help to absorb the poisons from infections such as with the toxic strains of E. coli that can cause life threatening bloody diarrhea as well as other serious complications. Practical treatments are described for from stomach upset to eye infection, cough, and constipation. The external as well as the internal use of herbs and charcoal is described. This book is a comprehensive compilation of Spirit of Prophecy discussion regarding the subjects mentioned in the title as well as related items such as stimulants and narcotics. The focus is on the frequently perceived great divide between the simple, natural medicines readily used at home and the evolving complex drug medications prescribed by health professionals during the last 160 years. The some 335 unique referenecs (many with multi-paragraphs) are organized by date of authorship. There are two useful indices—the first by treatment and the second by disease. There are nine appendices with helpful, not otherwise readily available, ancillary material.

From humble beginnings, Loma Linda University Health has grown to become a major health care and educational center impacting people around the world. Back in 1905, pioneer Seventh-day Adventist Ellen G. White insisted that such an institution be established somewhere in Southern California, near Redlands and Riverside. She also predicted properties would become available that were far below their initial price. Fellow Adventist pioneer John Burden found a property that had failed in two previous business ventures--first as a hotel, then as a sanitarium. The asking price was already well below the property's value, and the buildings were already fully furnished and stocked. "Make an offer," White told him. With his own money as down payment, Burden set in motion what has become a network of multiple hospitals and professional schools. Miracle upon miracle was needed to keep the fledgling organization afloat. Be inspired by the way the hand of Providence has--and continues to--work on behalf of Loma Linda.

Four forty-year generations have entirely passed since 1844. Each one has failed to take hold of the high calling of being in possession of the third angel's message—the “last message of mercy” for a dying world. The delay in the return of Christ must not be charged to God's account, as though He is waiting for some celestial time clock to reach a pre-determined mark. Although God knows the day and the hour, He has been waiting for us. As we look around us at the rapid deterioration of our planet and witness the increasing fulfilment of the signs of His appearing, we get a deep sense that we are getting very close to the end, perhaps even now entering into the time Jesus spoke of as “the beginning of sorrows.” Are we—the first generation of a new cycle of four—that generation that will see the close of probation, the time of trouble, and the return of Christ? Are there any Bible and Spirit of Prophecy evidences that point to it? Read the first section of this book! In the second section, we take a panoramic view of the history of the movement, giving an understanding of the causes of the long detour into the wilderness travelled by the professed people of God. The prophet Joel points to a story that must be told—a story of the wasting of four generations (Joel 1:2-4). It is important that we hear this story. If we do not know our history as it is, we will continue to perpetuate its mistakes. The message of this book is an alarm clock set to arouse God's people in the final moments of earth's history. It is sure to shake the reader. Accept it or reject it—you won’t be able to ignore it!
