These essays — moving, engaging, and deeply personal — explore the themes of family responsibility, growing up, and growing older. As the author, a divorced single mother beginning a new life and career in her forties, delves into the details of her own situation, she illuminates universal truths about what matters most: love, fulfillment, and the pain and necessity of huge change. These pieces about a woman in midlife struggling to come into her own in a complicated world are rich in insight and written with warmth, humour, and clear-eyed, sometimes devastating, honesty.“ Over a ten-year period, more than fifty of my essays appeared in newspapers, magazines, and on CBC radio, read by me. These intensely personal stories were published or broadcast on air almost as soon as I' d written them. For this former actor and lifelong diarist just beginning to emerge as a writer, they were a wonderful combination of writing and performance; the feedback I received sounded like applause. But those years, from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s, were difficult. I was the single mother of two teenagers, struggling to make a living and find a new path through the world."Beth Kaplan

20th Century Poetry and Poetics is considered the most important teaching anthology published in Canada for poetry courses at the college and university market. The greatly anticipated fourth edition of the anthology was published in the Spring of 1996 and the number of poets included was expanded by more than fifty per cent. The twenty-five poets new to this edition - - twelve women and thirteen men - are from Canada, the UK, the United States, and the Commonwealth. The list of new poets include Nobel Prize winner Dereck Walcott; well-known American poets Sharon Olds, Louise Gluck, Denise Levertov, Galway Kinnell, Robert Hass, Robert Bly, John Ashbery, Philip Levine, and Rita Dove; Irish poet Eavan Boland; Scottish poet Carol Ann Duffy; and Canadians Patrick Lane, Sharon Thesen, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Don McKay, Daphne Marlatt, Gary Geddes, Bronwen Wallace, Robert Kroetsch, Lorna Crozier, Tim Lilburn, Roo Borson, and bpNichol. The book provides in-depth selections from the work of each poet, and where possible, places the poems in the significant context of the poets' own views on poetics. In addition, there are useful biographies and comments on the poets in the form of headnotes that appear at the beginning of each poet's work.

Synopsis: Approaching thirty-five and facing a defining moment in a less than illustrious career, Isaac Preston sits alone at his desk eating a brown bag lunch. He's been fighting depression for years, but things are finally starting to look up, because he's just landed a new teaching job, his first job in some time. As he tries to ward off the demons that haunt him, he reminds himself that his current taste for bag lunches wasn't always part of his DNA. There was a time when the world was his oyster. Seventeen years earlier during the spring of 1995, his wizardry at basketball was the talk of Los Angeles. On the verge of receiving a basketball scholarship, all hell broke loose. In the midst of the O.J. Simpson trial, two stories were on everyone's lips in L.A. during the spring of '95: Would O.J. be convicted and where would Isaac Preston - hailed as the next Michael Jordan - play ball, in college or the NBA? There were a lot of things heating up in Los Angeles that year, including a pilot project at Isaac's school, placing youthful prisoners in with students to rehabilitate them. Amid the violence and Random Acts of Mayhem that erupted in Isaac's high school that year, many lives were changed forever. About the Author: Luther Lovelace Jr. excelled in high school track until an injury derailed his ambitions to win a sports scholarship. Formerly a senior aerospace engineer, his second career is teaching high school mathematics in Los Angeles. "College recruiters pound on my door almost every day in pursuit of athletes who view academics with moderate skepticism." NATIONAL BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE RBC TAYLOR PRIZE WINNER OF THE EDNA STAEBLER AWARD FOR CREATIVE NON-FICTION "Every day on a bike trip is like the one before--but it is also completely different, or perhaps you are different, woken up in new ways by the mile." As a teenager, Kate Harris realized that the career she most craved--that of a generalist explorer, equal parts swashbuckler and philosopher--had gone extinct. From her small-town home in Ontario, it seemed as if Marco Polo, Magellan and their like had long ago mapped the whole earth. So she vowed to become a scientist and go to Mars. To pass the time before she could launch into outer space, Kate set off by bicycle down a short section of the fabled Silk Road with her childhood friend Mel Yule, then settled down to study at Oxford and MIT. Eventually the truth dawned on her: an explorer, in any day and age, is by definition the kind of person who refuses to live between the lines. And Harris had soared most fully out of bounds right here on Earth, travelling a bygone trading route on her bicycle. So she quit the laboratory and hit the Silk Road again with Mel, this time determined to bike it from the beginning to end. Like Rebecca Solnit and Pico Iyer before her, Kate Harris offers a travel narrative at once exuberant and meditative, wry and rapturous. Weaving adventure and deep reflection with the history of science and exploration, Lands of Lost Borders explores the nature of limits and the wildness of a world that, like the self and like the stars, can never be fully mapped.

This book challenges every common presumption that exists about the trafficking of women for the sex trade. It is a detailed account of an entire population of trafficked Albanian women whose varied experiences, including selling sex on the streets of France, clearly demonstrate how much the present discourse about trafficked women is misplaced and inadequate. The heterogeneity of the women involved and their relationships with various men is clearly presented as is the way women actively created a panoptical surveillance of themselves as a means of self-policing. There is no artificial divide between women who were deceived and abused and those who "choose" sex work; in fact the book clearly shows how peripheral involvement in sex work was to the real agenda of the women involved. Most of the women described in this book were not making economic decisions to escape desperate poverty nor were they the uneducated nave entrapped into sexual slavery. The women's success in transiting trafficking to achieve their own goals without the assistance of any outside agency is a testimony to their resilience and resolve.
