Dr. Bosworth's treatise on Randolph County is fairly evenly divided between local history and genealogy. The narrative begins with a recounting of the adventures of its pioneering British, Irish, and German families, like the Tygarts, the organization of the county and its court, and the laying out of towns before attending to such customary topics as conflicts between pioneers and Native Americans, road construction, education, the Civil War in Randolph County, Randolph County professionals, etc. Strewn among these chapters are valuable lists of marriages, public officials, land patents, soldiers, physicians, attorneys, and so on. Of even greater interest to researchers, of course, are the scores of biographical notes at the conclusion of the book and the roughly 100 genealogical sketches of Randolph County founding families.

Painstakingly compiled from marriage bonds, ministers' returns, marriage registers, court order books, fee books, deed books, and minute books, as well as parish registers and Quaker meeting records, this work is the comprehensive listing of the 12,000 persons who were married in Loudoun County from the date of its creation until the introduction of marriage licenses in 1853. And not only does the work provide us with a list of married couples but also with all the other information in the records likely to be of value to the researcher: date of marriage bond and ceremony, place of residence, age, names of parents or names of bondsmen, sureties, and witnesses.

Reconstructing William Allen 1711-1799 is a combination history, biography, and genealogy of this immigrant from Northern Ireland who came to America in 1729. It explores not only the facts of his life, but places them within the context of the historical events of his time. It also attempts to build a picture of the communities within which he lived. In order to provide as broad a picture as possible, the book includes a social history of the Scots-Irish people, who spent a century or so in Northern Ireland before coming to America en masse during the 18th century.
