"Why develop a booklet about helping kids avoid alcohol?" Alcohol is a drug, as surely as cocaine and marijuana are. It's also illegal to drink under the age of 21. And it's dangerous. Kids who drink are more likely to: * Be victims of violent crime. * Have serious problems in school. * Be involved in drinking-related traffic crashes. This guide is geared to parents and guardians of young people ages 10 to 14. These suggestions are just that--suggestions. Trust your instincts. Choose ideas you are comfortable with, and use your own style in carrying out the approaches ou find useful. Underage drinking is a serious problem that carries serious consequences for children and teens, as well as for their parents. The sooner parents start talking with their kids about alcohol, the better the results. In fact, did you know that up until eighth grade, kids still look to their parents for approval about their life choices? Once they get to high school, peer group approval starts to become a factor. Parents: This means that you have a window of opportunity to speak to your kids about not drinking, and to have your words make a difference! Of course, the big question is “how?” That’s where we come in. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission—as part of our new Talk It Up! Campaign—has put together this tip book on ways to start the conversation with your eighth grader…and keep it going. Our best advice is to make talking about alcohol not THE talk, but an ongoing discussion. What follows are some ways to do that. Our second piece of advice? Start today. It is never too early to talk with your child or teen about drinking. Never.
