Managing Two Worlds

Based on an extensive and collaborative research effort, this book features findings from particular ethno-racial groups in Ontario, highlighting family life, social relations, citizenship, education, and employment. It also includes comparisons of immigrant and refugee youth from different countries of origin and includes an overview of current research on immigrant youth settlement, as well as an integrated summary of the research findings and perspectives for future investigation.

The focus of this book is on changes in the human situation wrought by unprecedented changes in science-based technology and expanding populations. Increasing scientific information concerning these changes and their consequences is beginning to alter people's perceptions, thus providing a rational basis for a worldwide environmental movement. This movement - complex and differentiated - works through political and educational means to establish new social priorities consistent with scientific findings and the sustainability of life on Earth. The success of this effort would signify a new phase of social development. The thesis of this book is that human-made changes in the condition of the Earth, accompanied by the changing attitudes and values implicit in the environmental movement, constitute an historical discontinuity. The present era represents a transition between the assumptions and conditions that have hitherto characterized the modern world, and those of the post-modern world that is emerging. Science and technology, so vividly symbolized in the view from outer space, are fundamentally changing our traditional beliefs about human opportunities and limitations - and these changes are slowly being reflected in international policies and laws. If humanity today succeeds in establishing a sustainable relationship to Earth, a higher level of civilisation will have been achieved. This thought-provoking view will interest students and professionals in the science and politics of the environment.

The global debt and adjustment crisis has challenged the World Bank to become the leading agency in North-South finance and development. Migration has been a life event for many Afghans during the past decades, with mass exoduses due to war, insecurity, and poverty. This book explores how Hazara migrant women reinterpret their narration of "self", ventilates opinions of their migratory lives and analyses ways Afghan immigrant women experience life in Germany. It presents an understanding how they experience sociocultural change as a consequence of their migratory experiences. It identifies contradictions in how Afghan immigrant women negotiate identity, belonging to and acquire status in the new society.

Although immigrants enter the United States from virtually every nation, Mexico has long been identified in the public imagination as one of the primary sources of the economic, social, and political problems associated with mass migration. Between Two Worlds explores the controversial issues surrounding the influx of Mexicans to America. The eleven essays in this anthology provide an overview of some of the most important interpretations of the historical and contemporary dimensions of the Mexican diaspora.

Between Two Worldstraces the social and economic performance of independent Ireland since the establishment of the state in 1922. The book is an analytical survey. It provides an overview of Ireland's social and economic policy from independence to the present day but also employs a comparative context in order to identify the nature of Irish economy and society. It concludes that Ireland has not benefited from economic growth to the same degree as other small open economies in Europe. The book assesses a number of possible explanations for this situation, including colonialism, neo-colonialism and under development. The author contends, however, that none of these models offer a satisfactory explanation of the reality of modern Ireland. He suggests instead that the Republic of Ireland can be characterised as a semi-peripheral state, similar to some Mediterranean countries, neither first world nor third worldoin short, a society that has experienced some development but which is neither a mature industrial nation nor a conspicuously poor one. In Part I the author discusses his experiences as Chief of Operations Analysis for Westmoreland during the 1966-67 phase of the Vietnam War. In 1969 he returns to Vietnam as Commanding General Force Artillery and Chief of Staff of Second Field Force, where his final action involves planning the 1970 Cambodian incursion. Turning down further promotions, in Part II he pursues a Ph.D. at Princeton on a campus alive with antiwar protest. We follow him to a tenured professorship at the University of Vermont, where his polling of U.S. generals who had served in Vietnam results in The War Managers, considered a classic book that sets forth their conflicting views on the conduct of that war.
