This manual is designed to provide primary health care program managers with guidance on how to use cost analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis as tools to achieve better understanding and management of resource flows. Although it has been prepared primarily for program managers at national, regional, and district levels, other health professionals can learn from it through a short training course or by individual study. Part A introduces unit financial costs and provides a first look at the effectiveness of health services, in six modules: what costs are, using cost data, planning the study, calculating costs, measuring effectiveness, and calculating unit financial costs. Part B covers other kinds of costs and compares costs and effectiveness estimates. Topics of the three modules are as follows: measuring and using economic costs, household costs, and cost-effectiveness analysis. In part C, several important uses of cost and cost-effectiveness data for planning and management are discussed and illustrated. Future costs, financial analysis, and managerial efficiency are the topics of the three modules. A set of exercises to be used with the individual modules follow. The Republic of Palau in the Caroline Islands has a traditional medical system developed over many generations. The Palau Primary Health Care Manual compiles traditional ethnomedical information about plants and presents it within the context of Western Medicine. Many common health conditions are discussed in this book, including those specific to Palauan culture. The book is divided into chapters that discuss plant therapies used in traditional medical care including preventive medicine, chronic disease, bites and stings, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders, skin disorders, cuts, wounds, and broken bones, stress, pain, women's health, men's health, colds and flu, and ear, nose, and throat. Also provided is scientific information about each species including efficacy, pharmacology, and potential toxicity, where known. It is intended as an educational manual for Palau and the Pacific region, an area where traditional medicine and some of the plants used in its practice, are endangered resources. Based on extensive on-island research and a comprehensive review of the literature, the book has been produced by a group of Palauan and international experts, specialists in ethnomedicine, clinical care, public health, biology, conservation, and Pacific Island culture.

An illustrated manual designed to help community health workers learn how to use simple drugs to treat common illnesses. Specific to health conditions in Southeast Asian countries, the book uses simple explanatory texts and illustrations to communicate instructions for treating illnesses and knowing when a patient must be referred to a doctor. First issued in 1988 and revised in 1992, the book has been further expanded and updated in line with new knowledge and considerable experience with use of the previous editions. The manual has two parts. The first provides instructions for the correct and appropriate use of 34 essential drugs, ranging from aspirin and paracetamol, through chloroquine and oral re-hydration salts, to penicillin tetracycline eye ointment and several vitamins. Each is described according to a common framework that explains how the drug helps, when it should be used, how it is supplied and given to patients, side effects that may occur, and special precautions to follow. Where appropriate, information on dosage and prescribing schedule by age and weight is set out in tabular form. Part two provides advice for the management or referral of 22 common medical problems moving from anemia, cough, diarrhea, and ear and eye problems through HIV/AIDS, leprosy, malaria and tuberculosis, to poisoning, snakebites, wounds, burns, and shock. Advice on pain relief and on the management of skin and tooth problems is also provided.
