This book collects recent theoretical developments in the area of material instability in elastic and plastic solids along with related analytical and numerical methods and applications. The existing different approaches to instability phenomena in metal single crystals, polycristals and in geomaterials are presented with the emphasis laid on mutual relations and on unifying concepts, including elliptictly loss and the energy criterion. Quasi-static bifurcation, initiation of single or multiple shear bands and post-critical strain localization are examined along with dynamic phenomena as wave propagation, moving shocks, internal snap-through and instability of flutter type. This gives an overview of a variety of material instability problems, methods and applications.

Modern, powerful computational methods, combined with major improvements in experimental techniques, have resulted in significant advances in the study of material instabilities. This book presents the latest research in the field of material instabilities in solid materials (soils, concrete, rocks, ceramics, metals, polymers and composites) and associated phenomena, such as strain localisation, fracture and failure in general. Collected within this volume are the cutting edge contributions from the prestigious IUTAM Symposium of 1997. A broad spectrum of materials is covered, with the emphasis on common aspects of failure, and a full range of experimental, analytical and numerical methods are addressed. In addition, the state-of-the-art, and recent advances covered in the book are summarised in the introductory chapter. No other treatise is available which is so up to date and compiled by such a broad spectrum of leading researchers. This book will find a wide appeal amongst practising engineers, researchers and students in civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and researchers and students in materials science.

Mechanics of Materials, Second Edition, Volume 2 presents discussions and worked examples of the behavior of solid bodies under load. The book covers the components and their respective mechanical behavior. The coverage of the text includes components such cylinders, struts, and diaphragms. The book covers the methods for analyzing experimental stress; torsion of non-circular and thin-walled sections; and strains beyond the elastic limit. Fatigue, creep, and fracture are also discussed. The text will be of great use to undergraduate and practitioners of various engineering braches, such as materials engineering and structural engineering.

More than six years ago, several of Rabotnov's close friends and colleagues from the USSR and USA decided to contribute a volume on Plasticity and Failure of Solids in honor of his 70th birthday. The celebration was interrupted unexpectedly by his death on May 13, 1985 at which time another decision was made still to publish the work, but as a memorial volume. As in any field of scientific endeavor, research confronts the scientists with anomalies; our chosen area is no exception. The ways in which failure criteria and plasticity theory are combined can differ widely among the researchers; they will never yield quite the same results. Each of the invited contributors has, therefore, been encouraged to express his views and to expound on his personal opinion. The contributors are free of enumeration from the authority and/or consensus of any scientific society or community. What impedes scientific process is the esoteric tradition of accepting ideas and theories by consensus among members of societies and communities. The absence of such a trend is refreshing; the collaboration between the authors from the USSR and the USA had to be one of the contributing factors. Finally, the editors wish to acknowledge the authors who have made the publication of this volume possible. a. c. Sib S. T. Mileiko AJ. This volume comprises two classic essays on the mathematical theories of elasticity and plasticity by authorities in this area of engineering science. Undergraduate and graduate students in engineering as well as professional engineers will find these works excellent texts and references. The Mathematical Theory of Elasticity covers plane stress and plane strain in the isotropic medium, holes and fillets of assignable shapes, approximate conformal mapping, reinforcement of holes, mixed boundary value problems, the third fundamental problem in two dimensions, eigensolutions for plane and axisymmetric states, anisotropic elasticity, thermal stress, elastic waves induced by thermal shock, three-dimensional contact problems, wave propagation, traveling loads and sources of disturbance, diffraction, and pulse propagation. The Mathematical Theory of Plasticity explores the theory of perfectly plastic solids, the theory of strain-hardening plastic solids, piecewise linear plasticity, minimum principles of plasticity, bending of a circular plate, and other problems.

The subject of coupled instabilities is a fascinating field of research with a wide range of practical applications, particularly in the analysis and design of metal structures. Despite the excellent body of existing results concerning coupled instability structural behaviour, this situation has not yet been adequately translated into design rules or specifications. In fact, only to a small extent do modern design codes for metal structures take advantage of the significant progress made in the field. This book, which contains all the invited general reports and selected papers presented at the Third International Conference on “Coupled Instabilities in Metal Structures” (CIMS '2000), should provide a meaningful contribution towards filling the gap between research and practice.

Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the cause of the disruption to the smooth running of the process. In the natural environment, understanding the behaviour of particulate materials is vital in many geophysical processes such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. This book is a collection of current research from some of the major contributors in the topic of modelling the behaviour of granular materials. Papers from every area of current activity are included, such as theoretical, numerical, engineering and computational approaches. This book illustrates the numerous diverse approaches to one of the outstanding problems of modern continuum mechanics.
