Excerpt from Measurement of Pulsed-Laser Power We describe calibrating several Optical-pulse power meters to an accuracy of about 82 or better. The meters are designed for Q-switched neodymium lasers with peak powers in excess of a few megawatts and pulses longer than five or ten nanoseconds. Combined with a fast oscilloscope or a transient digitizer, the meters display the time-domain waveform of the laser emission and thereby allow determination of Parameters such as transition duration (risetime, falltime), duration and peak power. We discuss calibrating the meters by both pulsed and cw methods, and show why each method is useful as a check on the other. We treat in some detail the effect of speckle on the use of diffusers as attenuators in power-meters such as ours. Electrical Engineering Introduction to Laser Technology, Third Edition Would you like to know how a laser works, and how it can be modified for your own specific tasks? This intuitive third edition-previously published as Understanding Laser Technology, First and Second Editions-introduces engineers, scientists, technicians, and novices alike to the world of modern lasers, without delving into the mathematical details of quantum electronics. It is the only introductory text on the market today that explains the underlying physics and engineering applicable to all lasers. A unique combination of clarity and technical depth, this book begins with an introductory chapter that explains the characteristics and important applications of commercial lasers worldwide. It proceeds with discussions on light and optics, the fundamental elements of lasers, and laser modification. The concluding chapters are composed of a survey of modern lasers, including: Semiconductor lasers Optically pumped solid-state lasers Ion, HeNe, and HeCd lasers Carbon dioxide lasers Excimer lasers (codiscovered by J. J. Ewing) Ultrafast and tunable lasers, OPOs Introduction to Laser Technology, Third Edition is intended for those who are familiar with the principles of electro-optical technology, but possess limited formal training. This comprehensive treatment is essential, one-stop shopping for professionals, students, and non-engineer executives interested in the design, sales, or applications of the laser and electro-optics industry.

High Speed Pulse Technology: Volume II: Optical Pulses - Lasers - Measuring Techniques focuses on the theoretical and engineering problems that result from the capacitor discharge technique. This book is organized into three main topics: light flash production from a capacitive energy storage; signal transmission and ranging systems by capacitor discharges and lasers; and impulse measuring technique. This text specifically discusses the air spark under atmospheric conditions, industrial equipment for laser flashing, and claims for light transmitting system. The application of light impulse signal transmission, impulse measurements by means of spark gaps, and conversion factors of various energy units are also described. This publication is recommended for eager electrical engineering and physics students interested in optical pulses, lasers, and measuring techniques.

Calorimeters for measuring the output energy of pulsed ruby and neodymium glass lasers have been built and calibrated. The absorbing medium is an aqueous solution of CuSO4. Calibration of *laser energy detectors has an estimated uncertainty of plus or minus 2% for input energies of 0.1J to 100J.Instrumentation is described that is used for the calibration of cw laser power meters. The calibration unit employs an absorption cell calorimeter to calibrate the output of a photovoltaic cell transfer detector. The calibrations are within an accuracy of 4%.A discussion and description is also given of several types of calorimeters that have been used to measure the output of a 100 watt CO2 laser. The most recent design provides for measurement from 1 watt to 5 kilowatts with a measured accuracy of better than 3%.(Author).

This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.
