The book is focused on constitutive description of mechanical behaviour of engineering materials: both conventional (polycrystalline homogeneous isotropic or anisotropic metallic materials) and non-conventional (heterogeneous multicomponent anisotropic composite materials). Effective material properties at the macro-level depend on both the material microstructure (originally isotropic or anisotropic) as well as dissipative phenomena occurred on fabrication and consecutive loading phase (hardening) resulting in irreversible microstructure changes (acquired anisotropy). The material symmetry is a background and anisotropy is a core around which the book is formed. This book aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory and applications of the mechanics of transversely isotropic elastic materials. There are many reasons why it should be written. First, the theory of transversely isotropic elastic materials is an important branch of applied mathematics and engineering science; but because of the difficulties caused by anisotropy, the mathematical treatments and descriptions of individual problems have been scattered throughout the technical literature. This often hinders further development and applications. Hence, a text that can present the theory and solution methodology uniformly is necessary. Secondly, with the rapid development of modern technologies, the theory of transversely isotropic elasticity has become increasingly important. In addition to the fields with which the theory has traditionally been associated, such as civil engineering and materials engineering, many emerging technologies have demanded the development of transversely isotropic elasticity. Some immediate examples are thin film technology, piezoelectric technology, functionally gradient materials technology and those involving transversely isotropic and layered microstructures, such as multi-layer systems and tribology mechanics of magnetic recording devices. Thus a unified mathematical treatment and presentation of solution methods for a wide range of mechanics models are of primary importance to both technological and economic progress.

The scope of this book is based on the keynote lectures delivered during the Inter national Symposium on Anisotropic Behaviour of Damaged Materials ABDM, held in Krakow-Przegorzaiy, Poland, September 9-11, 2002. The Symposium was organized by the Solid Mechanics Division of the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Design - Cracow University of Technology, under aus pices of the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Cracow University of Technology, Prof. S. Michalowski. Ten chapters of this book in their present form essentially exceed lectures de livered at the Symposium. They should rather be read as not only author's recent achievements in the field, but also the state of art and synthesis done by the lead ers in the mechanics community. The mixed formula of the Symposium, namely: the invited lectures and presentations of the original papers by the participants was used. 23 original papers, published in the Symposium Proceedings on CD, exhaust the full scope of the ABDM Symposium. In 1978, the European Mechanics Committee and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique agreed to the organization of an Interna­ tional Colloquium on the "Mechanical Behavior of Anisotropic Solids". The meeting was held at Villard-de-Lans (near Grenoble, France) from 19th to 22 nd June 1979. The Colloquium considered mechanical aspects of the anisotropy of solids, both initial and induced by permanent deformation, anisotropic hardening and damage, oriented fissuration, etc. Topics concerned mathematical, experimental and engineering aspects of the anisotropy of metals, composites, soils and rocks. The aim of the Colloquium was to bring together experimentalists, theoretecians and engineers interested in various features of mechanical anisotropy, in order to permit an interdisciplinary exchange of understanding, experience and methods. A detailed description of the scope, aim and proposed topics is contained in the Preface. The announcement of the Colloquium attracted a large number of sub­ mitted contributions. Conforming with the principles of Euromech Colloquia and of the Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, the accepted contributions were limited to 50 communications. A general description of the scientific program is to be found in the Preface. Five general lectures gave state-of-the-art reports concerning some areas of the behavior of anisotropic solids; the 50 communications were divided into 12 sessions dealing with specific topics (see "Contents"). In order to facilitate subsequent contact between the reader and the contributors, full addresses are given in the "List of Authors".
