Media Conflict And Peace In Northeast India

The media have a special relationship with conflict situations, external or internal which has been an integral part of the history of a country as well as the world. Northeast India has been beset with insurgencies for more than half-a-century. The Nagas rebelled in the early 1950s and since then insurgency in some form or the other has spread to all the states of the northeast, popularly known as seven sisters. While insurgency in the northeast India is taking a toll of the law and order, peace, stability, progress and foreign relations; it is also causing irreparable harm to the press, the developments and the decision making process in administration. So, should it be the media’s mission to promote peace, democracy and growth in this region? This edited volume contains ten essays written by prominent media persons with first-hand experience of reporting on conflicts in northeast India. It provides the broad range of factors including the manner in which media operates and their relationship to the various ethnic conflicts in the region. This book is perhaps the first of its kind which explored many possibilities how to restore peace and public’s confidence in the region by engaging media as facilitator in the process.

In recent decades, the states in the northeast of India have been home to a number of protracted violent conflicts. And while the role of women's movements in responding to conflict and violence tend to be marginalized both by the media and by scholarship, they have played a crucial role in attempts to strengthen civil society and bring peace to the region. This collection offers a close look at the successes and failures of those efforts, adding important insight into ongoing debates on gender and political change in societies affected by conflict. At the same time, the book takes a fresh, critical look at universalist feminist and interventionist biases that have tended to see peace processes as windows of opportunity for women's empowerment while ignoring the complexity of gender relations during conflict.

The volume discusses critical issues surrounding the developments in gender movements in the last two decades in India following the Delhi rape case and the ensuing massive protests in December 2012. A critical documentation of some of the key moments surrounding the contemporary gendered formations and radicalisms in South Asia, the chapters span questions of class, caste, sexuality, digital feminisms, and conflict zones. The book looks at anger, protest, and imaginations of resistance. It showcases the ‘new’ visibility that digital spaces have opened up to lend voice to survivors who are let down by traditional justice mechanisms and raises questions regarding ‘individualized’ modes of seeking justice as against traditional ‘collective’ voices that have always been a hallmark of movements. There are several traditional values for peace in the Khasi Contemporary society similar to what Bareh has discussed in his book The History and Culture of the Khasi People. These traditional values include knowing God knowing man, earning righteousness, knowing maternal and paternal kinship. In addition to that, politeness count, living a simple life, justice, truth, respect, discipline, hard work, and sanctity of marriage, forgiveness, cooperation, community spirit, hospitality, honesty and the spirit of compromise. These traditional values for peace were found to be practiced among Khasi community in the realm of social, economic, political, religious, and ecological aspect. The Khasi traditional values are still relevant in the so-called modern Society. Therefore, there is a need to imbibe those values in order to contribute to peace in the society. Imbibing the traditional values in the present context is very much needed because as we see in today’s world there are a lot of discriminations, corruption, injustice and lack of respect to one another which is domineering the world. This is a cry of every human being and cosmos that, peace is the need of the hour. Individuals, scholars, various groups, institution and so on, have initiated the thought that the concept of peace is not extinct and should not be push to the periphery but it should be used to overcome this 21st century culture and lifestyle.
