This book examines scholastic conceptions of final causality through the methods and concerns of historical theology. It argues the history of final causality is most profitably understood according to the interplay of regularity, order, and intentionality as interpretive categories. Within this analytic framework, the author explores the history and theological implications of final causality from Aristotle to Nicole Oresme, utilizing shifts in the dominant interpretive category to clarify how final causality could change from one of four co-equal explanatory strategies in Aristotle to the cause of causes in Avicenna to a merely metaphorical cause in Walter Chatton. Theological debates – ranging from questions of creation, the relationship of primary and secondary causality and of the ultimate good to secondary goods, the autonomy or instrumentality of nature, and the compatibility of chance with providence – motivated many of these changes. The chapters examine final causality in Aristotle and the commentorial tradition from late antiquity to medieval Arabic sources and then consider in detail various scholastic understandings and uses of final causality. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of historical theology, systematic theology, scholastic thought, and medieval philosophy.

The legacy of late medieval Franciscan thought is uncontested: for generations, the influence of late-13th and 14th century Franciscans on the development of modern thought has been celebrated by some and loathed by others. However, the legacy of early Franciscan thought, as it developed in the first generation of Franciscan thinkers who worked at the recently-founded University of Paris in the first half of the 13th century, is a virtually foreign concept in the relevant scholarship. The reason for this is that early Franciscans are widely regarded as mere codifiers and perpetrators of the earlier medieval, largely Augustinian, tradition, from which later Franciscans supposedly departed. In this study, leading scholars of both periods in the Franciscan intellectual tradition join forces to highlight the continuity between early and late Franciscan thinkers which is often overlooked by those who emphasize their discrepancies in terms of methodology and sources. At the same time, the contributors seek to paint a more nuanced picture of the tradition’s legacy to Western thought, highlighting aspects of it that were passed down for generations to follow as well as the extremely different contexts and ends for which originally Franciscan ideas came to be employed in later medieval and modern thought.

A unique study of Pre-Reformation Scottish philosophers and philosophy. The greatest of the philosophers was John Duns Scotus, but there were others such as John Ireland, John Mair of Haddington and George Lokert of Ayr. Focusing on the concepts of will, intellect and faith, Professor Broadie investigates the philosophy of these men and the relationships between their ideas. He places them within the framework of the medieval dispute between nominalists and realists which so characterised philosophy and theology in the Middle Ages. Scotus' account of the primacy of will over intellect was demonstrably influenced by his Franciscan inheritance. Will is the faculty of freedom. However, how can our acts be free if God has known from eternity that we will perform them? This question is examined in relation to John Ireland's major theological work, The Mirror of Wisdom. Professor Broadie analyses the concept of faith as presented by John Mair and his Scottish contemporaries, and their doctrine that giving assent as an act of faith involves two stages, an act of intellect by which hesitant assent is given, and an act of free will by which hesitancy is replaced by certainty.
