Asturias contemporánea (1808-1936), de David Ruiz, estudia sintéticamente ese amplio periodo histórico que va desde el fin del Antiguo Régimen, etapa en la que destaca la aportación asturiana a una revolución liberal fallida, hasta la profunda crisis social y política abre con la proclamación de la II República española, crisis que alcanzará en Asturias sus puntos álgidos con la Revolución de Octubre y el triunfo del Frente Popular. El autor se enfrenta con la historia del pasado asturiano y sitúa en el contexto de la historia española con la intención de que ambas puedan explicarse de manera mas convincente. Al sondear el pasado en busca de explicaciones que faciliten la correcta comprensión de la realidad presente, David Ruiz va analizando en qué medida la sociedad asturiana, inserta en el marco de un estado centralista, se ha planteado la solución que se fueron gestando a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos, problemas que, en algunos casos, siguen aún gravitando sobre la región asturiana.
