After the American Civil War, Donn Piatt spent much of his life writing about that conflict as a journalist and editor. Though not a combat soldier, he was a staff officer in close proximity to Abraham Lincoln, Edwin Stanton, William Seward, Ulysses S. Grant, George Thomas, and W.T. Sherman. In this volume, he shares wonderful anecdotes about his meetings with some of these men. His stories of Lincoln, Stanton, and Seward are worth the price alone. But he offers more. In addition to a long section on George Thomas, he provides an analysis from first-hand information about the likelihood that the French were preparing to support the Confederacy. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. The first thing you'll notice about Warren Goss’ fluid and articulate writing is that he was an educated man. A teacher before the Civil War, he joined the 2nd Regiment, Massachusetts Heavy Artillery as a sergeant. That he survived not one but two captures and incarcerations in the South is nothing short of miraculous. The heartbreak, horrendous conditions, escapes, recapture, false hopes, and death...always death...were enough to break any man. Many died from disease and the loss of a will to live. Warren Goss survived it all and spent the rest of his life writing about it. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Though his name is not recognized by more than a handful of Americans, he revolutionized the way large armies and equipment were moved in wartime. He offered to work without rank or pay but eventually accepted a commission...with conditions as told in this book. The fascinating story of how the largest army in history to that date was almost miraculously moved from place to place during the American Civil War is revealed in this volume by General Herman Haupt. He was also key to understanding how the Confederate armies moved and warned General Meade of the impending approach to Gettysburg by Robert E. Lee. Of special interest is Haupt's assessments of the generals and men he worked with during the war, including Lincoln, Grant, Meade, Hooker, Burnside, and more. A successful businessman before and after the war, General Haupt was still working at age 85, when this book was first published. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. "[War] has its fascinations, as drunkenness, licentiousness, murder, journalism, and the stage have theirs. What is War, after all, but scientific assassination, throat-gutting by rule, causing misery and vice, and pain and death by prescribed forms? It is a palpable anachronism, and yet it continues..." We are fortunate to have this remarkable book by famous jounalist Junius Henri Browne, a special war correspondent for the New York Tribune who not only reported from the field in the Civil War but spent time as a captive of the Rebels. A literate, witty, urbane man with a coterie of fellow correspondents at his side (whom he called the Bohemians), Browne witnessed all the horror and carnage of the American Civil War. He was at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and more. As in wars today, some of his fellow reporters were among the casualties. He also wrote of the humorous, the ironic, and the ridiculous side of the conflict. On May 3, 1863, while dodging the shore batteries during the siege of Vicksburg, Browne and his friends were captured by Confederate soldiers. For more than two years, he endured all the deprivations of horribly inadequate prisoner camps, all the while plotting escape. In exciting, witty prose, Browne has left us an account of the war like no other, written shortly after his escape and repatriation to the North in 1865. At the end of the conflict, he adds his thoughts on the future. An opponent of slavery, he says: "Nothing, however, let me remark, seems more inconsistent and irrational than the supposition that the negroes, who have for generations raised the products of the South, while enslaved, will be unable to do so when emancipated." Though written during her exile in England, from which she would not return until her death, Asia Booth Clarke's memoir of her famous brother was not published until 1938. She had given the "locked book" to a friend for keeping "to publish sometime if he sees fit." The friend did not see fit to publish it while Asia, her brother Edwin Booth, or her former husband John Clarke were still alive. So it was left to Eleanor Farjeon to complete the task after the death of her father. This is a unique look at the man who changed the world by assassinating Abraham Lincoln. Long viewed as a demon, fanatic, madman, and narcissist, Asia Clarke's memoir attempts to humanize the man she deeply loved and who was loved by many friends and family members. This fascinating account adds to the complexity and mystery of Booth and his actions. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. "Woman, like man, should be freely permitted to do whatever she can do well." So said Frances E. Willard, who lived her life in the firm belief of this principle and who was instrumental in the passage of two amendments to the U.S. Constitution. A passionate advocate for women's rights, prohibition, and underprivileged people, she was devoted to making federal aid to education, free school lunches, unions, the eight-hour work day, work relief for the poor, municipal sanitation and boards of health, national transportation, anti-rape laws, and protections against child abuse a reality. This long-forgotten and out-of-print book is available for the first time for e-readers. In Willard's own words she describes her life as an educator, temperance reformer, and suffragist. She was an educator and later president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union She traveled extensively and even climbed the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Her sexual orientation is still debated today but she states in this volume: "The loves of women for each other grow more numerous each day and I have pondered much why these things were. That so little should be said about them surprises me, for they are everywhere... In these days when any capable and careful woman can honorably earn her own support, there is no village that has not its examples of 'two hearts in counsel,' both of which are feminine." She had many passionate attachments to other women and she discusses this in her book. Willard was the first woman whose statue was included in the Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol building. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
