He wants to possess me, body, soul - and heart. I'll do anything to get away from him, but first that means getting closer. I want to feel only hatred for my captor but beneath his uniform I discover a man with a past as scarred as Berlin's. And if I don't escape him soon it will be too late.

ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 259 In this 259th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the two Cornish legends of “THE SAMSON OF TAVISTOCK and THE MIDNIGHT HUNTER OF THE MOOR” In the first legend Baba Indaba tells us the true legend of THE SAMSON OF TAVISTOCK. In 961AD Orgar, the Earl of Devon founded Tavistock Abbey. He died in 971AD and his son, Ordulph completed the task in 981. This legend is but one of many about Ordulph who, by reports, was a giant of a man. You are invited to download and read of the feats of this giant whose bones were found during the construction of the Bedford Hotel. When excavating the foundations a large sarcophagus was found with unusually large thigh bones within, which were taken to be those of Ordulf. The location of the sarcophagus was where the Abbey’s cloister would have been. In THE MIDNIGHT HUNTER OF THE MOOR Baba Indaba tells us the legend of the Abbotts Way, which is a very ancient road and runs across the southern part of the heart of wild Dartmoor. To-day, much of this old trackway has gone back to nature and cannot be distinguished from the rugged moorland across which it passes, but some stretches of it survive in a strange green path marked here and there by a boundary stone or a much-weathered Celtic cross. But the old stories—tales perhaps even older than the road—tell that the Abbot's Way is the favourite hunting ground of the Wish Hounds or Yell Hounds, an eerie spectre-pack that hunts across the wildest parts of the moor on moonless nights. Strange, gruesome tales of those, benighted, or lost in the fog who never came home. You are invited to download and read these two legends on a dark and stormy night to young scared children kept awake by the wind, thunder and lightning. Be sure to open the blinds and switch the lights off to create a bit of “atmosphere”. The place, town or city is relevant to the story. HINT - use Google maps. Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. 'Zimler is an honest, powerful writer' The Guardian 'pacey and accessible... deeply moving' The Observer At the dawn of the nineteenth century, John Stewart Zarco lives out an inquisitive, naive childhood in his idyllic Porto community. But societal prejudices against his family's Jewish faith shatter his innocence and even come to threaten his life. Following the tragic death of his dearest friend, it is only his unlikely bond with Midnight, an African healer and freed slave, that restores a sense of safety. But this fragile, fleeting peace is destroyed when Napoleon's armies invade Portugal and John suffers another devastating loss – one rooted in unspeakable betrayal and authored by those closest to him. The revelation sets John on course for antebellum America, in what might ultimately prove to be a doomed quest for hope amid unspeakable cruelty and sin. Rich in historical detail and mysticism, Hunting Midnight is Richard Zimler's mesmerising tale of deception, guilt, forgiveness and devotion, played out against a backdrop of war, slavery and religious oppression. 'I defy anyone to put this book down. It is a wonderful novel; a big, bold-hearted love story that will sweep you up and take you, uncomplaining, on a journey full of heartbreak and light.' Nicholas Shakespeare 'A gripping adventure story, which can also be read at deeper levels' The Independent 'Zimler packs his tale with exotic detail... absorbing' Publishers Weekly

In a nineteenth-century Britain where magecraft has directed the course of history, a ruthless conspiracy plots intrigue, treason, and murder. Only a pair of brilliant misfits suspect anything is wrong. And to avert disaster, they’ll have to solve a royal mystery more than a decade cold. As the term at Oxford’s Merlin College ends, shy, bookish Gray Marshall accompanies his tutor to the country with nowhere else to go. A misadventure has left him in disgrace with his friends and—temporarily?—without magick. He overheard what sounded like a plan to murder the Master of Merlin. But he has no way to investigate his suspicions, and no one to trust. Until his professor’s odd, neglected middle daughter, Sophie, befriends him, and he realizes there is far more to her than meets the eye. According to her father, Sophie’s dreams of education are unsuitable to a woman. So her midnight library excursions to learn despite him have left her with subtle skills in gathering information, plenty of daring, and even more frustration. As Sophie and Gray begin to guess the aims of the conspirators, they know they must act. But for any chance at justice, they must risk all they have—and change who they are to each other forever... Praise for The Midnight Queen: “Debut novelist Sylvia Izzo Hunter renders both the setting and characters in vivid detail. The structured system of magick gives the fictional world weight, and Hunter manipulates the seemingly disparate plot elements to create tension that culminates in a satisfying conclusion.” — Shelf Awareness “Hunter pulls from a multitude of mystical tales and myths to create her own magical version of Britain that is both innovative and intriguing. ... A fresh and inventive historical novel ... I can’t wait to see what Sylvia Izzo Hunter does next.” — Marie Brennan, author of A Natural History of Dragons “Elegantly written, fast-paced and highly original – a stunning story of magic, scholarship, and true love. Sylvia Izzo Hunter brings both rural Brittany and an alternative Regency England to vivid life. A remarkably assured debut.” — Juliet Marillier, national bestselling author of the Sevenwaters novels
