This book demonstrates a successful and sustainable model for value addition to millets from production to consumption. This book reveals the various components of the sorghum value chain and the interventions attempted under the National Agricultural Innovation Project's (NAIP) Millets Value Chain subproject in India. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the production and utilization of millets, while chapter 2 highlights the gaps in and scope of the millets value chain. Chapter 3 discusses the nutritional and health benefits of millets. The next chapters discuss the NAIP value chain interventions at the on-farm production stage (chapter 4); at the processing stage (chapter 5); and with regard to consumer acceptability, entrepreneurship, commercialization, promotion and policymaking (chapter 6). Chapter 7 presents an impact assessment of the millets value chain interventions. Finally, chapter 8 highlights the constraints and challenges to the value chain project and the prospects for the future.

Millets: Ensuring Climate Resilience and Nutritional Security presents the current status of germplasm resource management and genetic improvement of group of climate smart nutri-cereal crops called Millets encompassing Sorghum, Pearl Millet, and Small Millets comprising Finger Millet, Foxtail Millet, Kodo Millet, Proso Millet, Barnyard Millet and Little Millet. The focus is on genetic improvement, agronomy, physiology, biotic and abiotic stresses, pest and disease management, molecular marker-aided approaches for improvement of millets, nutritional and health benefits of millets, utilization pattern, creating demand through value addition, commercialization and marketing of millet products, sustaining viability of informal millet seed systems and Innovative seed delivery models. The emphasis is on improvement of millets elucidating the future road map to enhance scope of millets as "MIRACLE NUTRI-CEREALS" through value chain to ensure food, feed, fodder, biofulel, nutritional and livelihood security, including climate resilience.

Millets are small-grained, annual, warm weather cereal. The millets offer both nutritional and livelihood security of human population and fodder security of diverse livestock population in dryland region of India. Millets are highly nutritious, they are known as health foods especially for control of diabetes and mineral deficiencies. One of the major factors for declining consumption of millets is the lack of awareness of their nutritive value and inconvenience of their preparation. This book covers both, chemistry and novel technology for millet processing and development. It summarizes the latest information on millets, their nutritional and health benefits, historical perspective, utilization, R&D efforts, present status and the importance being given by policy makers for promoting millets for sustainable agriculture and healthy society. Orphan Crops for Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security discusses the issues, challenges, needs and opportunities related to the promotion of orphan crops, known also as neglected and underutilized species (NUS).
