Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To afiect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of' the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and' developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for direc tions which will give them not so much a model for direct imita tion as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elemenary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. This book also, like Dr Kiihn's Lesebuch, is attractively illustrated with suitable woodcuts. There is naturally a strong tendency to illustrate the Realien V in various ways. So much is this the case that at first one is liable to be misled into the supposition that Realien are the illustrations used to make the life and habits of the foreign nation more real to the pupils. Realien do not, however, consist; in objects, maps, pictures, etc. THey are rather the national y facts or "realities" which these illustrate. There is no doubt as to the importance and utility of this Sachunterricht, but I more than once heard German teachers express the opinion that it is a little over-done now-a-days. "What do German boys want to know about English football, etc.?" And, indeed, I found that Tom Brown's Schooldays is not so well known in German schools as St Winifred's. Nevertheless, wherever I came across the teaching of Realien, I always noticed that it increased the interest and zeal of teacher and pupils alike. In many schools they have ample means of teaching English...

Excerpt from A New Elementary Course in the German Language: For the Use of Schools One language contains all the general principles of every other. Comparative philology - a new science - is entirely changing the mode of teaching languages. It shows that the true method of acquiring a foreign tongue is by compar ing it with the one already known. The aim of this work is to make a practical application of the recent improvements in this direction. The pupil is supposed to be familiar with the English language. Its grammar being Teutonic or German, no at tempt is made to teach what should properly be studied in the native tongue. The German and English are brought side by side, their differences and affinities compared, and that point taught first which will open to the learner the broadest field. A large majority of the German words may be formed from the English by a regular system of consonant changes. For this reason, the chief study will be the forms of words. The same principle is followed in developing the endings which characterize these words in their relations to each other. The pupil is encumbered as little as possible with minor details and exceptional cases. The illustrations though drawn from the language of real life, are free from colloquial, proverbial or poetical idioms.
