Monstrosity From The Inside Out

Emerging from darkness, daring to take form and become something more than the Other, monsters stalk these pages, shifting form in true monstrous fashion as they inhabit literature and film, history and parallel communities modelled after our own. They become enmeshed in popular music, run rampant through cities, take androgynous form to rally for their own identities, their own futures, and their own families, and they hold up mirrors while we are caught shattering our sense of Self. Both the past and the future are rich fodder for the evil that monsters do, and from freak show to homunculus to serial killer to cyborg, they remind us that they are never far from sight - and that we cannot look away even if we wish to. Monstrosity from the Inside Out takes as the paradox that monsters are simultaneously impossible and very much a part of what it means to be human.

Monstrous textuality emerges when Gothic narratives like Frankenstein reflect the monstrous in their narrative structure to create narratives of resistance. It allows writers to meta-narratively reflect their own poetics and textual production, and reclaim authority over their work under circumstances of systemic cultural oppression and Othering. This book traces the representation of other Others through Black feminist hauntology in Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987) and Love (2003); it explores fat freak embodiment as a feminist resistance strategy in Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus (1984) and Margaret Atwood’s Lady Oracle (1976); and it reads Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy (2003–13) and Shelley Jackson’s Patchwork Girl (1995) within a framework of critical posthumanist and cyborg theory. The result is a comprehensive argument about how these texts can be read within a framework of critical posthumanist questioning of knowledge production, and of epistemological exploration, beyond the exclusionary humanist paradigm.

The essays gathered in the present collection provide textual explorations of the theoretical borderland between interiors and exteriors, undertaken from a variety of perspectives and representing varying approaches and understandings of these terms. In the realm of theory, the distinction between what we choose to include and what we exclude remains a political choice, often fraught with dilemmas that cannot be resolved. How to discern between interiors and exteriors? Where do we draw dividing lines? Do we want to draw them anymore? Or, alternately, can we afford not to divide and discern between the inside and outside, between here and there, between “us” and “them”? If the binary divisions, so much discredited, no longer hold, if we must include multiplicity and plurality of readings, is any distinction between these dimensions possible? A collection of scholarship on monsters and their meaning—across genres, disciplines, methodologies, and time—from foundational texts to the most recent contributions Zombies and vampires, banshees and basilisks, demons and wendigos, goblins, gorgons, golems, and ghosts. This volume contains discussions and dissections of monsters across multiple media and geographical origins. However, the notable shifts in how we engage monsters and monstrosity feature heavily in this volume. Chapters tackle resurrections of previous series and conversations through films like Jurassic World and Krampus. Others gravitate towards the rebirth of some of the older, tried and true monsters like vampires and zombies, including analyses of Pride And Prejudice + Zombies, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, iZombie, and Teen Wolf – all of which reinterpreted and reinvented these creatures for the modern audience. While the text serves to address these new iterations of the “Classic” monsters in the cannon, others look at strangers, more fringe monster narratives like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Village, or even the very real parasitic monstrosities of Monsters Inside Me.

This edited volume takes a new look at an old question: what is the relationship between beauty and monstrosity? How has the notion of beauty transformed through the years and how does it coincide with monstrous ontologies? Contributors offer an interdisciplinary approach to how these two concepts are interlinked and emphasize the ways the beautiful and the monstrous pervade human experience. The two notions are explored through the axis of human transformation, focusing on body, identity, and gender, while questioning both how humans transform their body and space as well as how humans themselves are gradually transformed in different contexts. The pandemic, gender crisis, moral crisis, sociocultural instability, and environmental issues have redefined beauty and the relationship we have with it. Exploring these concepts through the lens of human transformation can yield valuable insights into what it means to be human in a world of constant change. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, archaeology, philosophy, architecture, and cultural studies.
