Herb Streifer was born in the Bronx in 1915, an area where upward, aspiring immigrants-Jewish, Italian and Irish-went to escape the ghettos of the lower East Side. When his father died in 1930 at the beginning of the Great Depression, Streifer was fifteen. He and his siblings helped their mother run the family grocery in Elmhurst, Queens through the depression years. Cash became so tight they had to give up their large apartment and move to the back of the store. Once Streifer finished high school, he continued working and went to City College nights. He graduated in 1941 with a BS just in time to be drafted into the army. Streifer married during WW II and, after the war, earned an MBA by night at NYU, and started a family. From these experiences, his wry humor, and an appreciation for a great anecdote, the stories came.

This book reports on various real-world and global engineering problems while touching on evolving design strategies. The chapters were selected from the 2nd International Conference on Marine and Advanced Technologies 2021 (ICMAT 2021). The papers discuss best practice and theory in relation to multi-disciplinary approaches in materials engineering technology. Among the topics are advanced materials, applied science, marine engineering and energy application.

Agat Harbor, Guam, was selected for monitoring under the Monitoring of Coastal Projects Program, which is sponsored by Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During a 3-year observation period, the following data were collected: a. Directional energy spectra and surface winds from an offshore site. b. Energy spectra at several locations on a shore-normal transect across the reef flat. c. Wave conditions and water elevations at the structure and harbor response during large wave events. d. Directional energy spectra at the outer boundary of the model and at several sites within the harbor. e. Energy spectra at the outer and inner ends of the channel. f Periodic site inspections and aerial photographs of the harbor and surroundings. Most of the quantitative objectives of the study were not met because of the lack of measured data during high-energy events. However, observations have resulted in valuable qualitative information that should be considered when planning or designing projects in a similar environment.
