This book presents a collection of chapters that examine various dimensions of development. Between 2000 and 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) remained the overarching development framework that governed the international development community. After a decade and half of commitment to the MDGs, the framework is widely considered a success, although progress reported across countries has been uneven. The new overarching international development framework may not be successful or present the best opportunities for the desired global change without a better understanding of factors that contributed the most or the least to the attainment of the MDGs. The chapters presented in this book provide discussions and insights into understanding these factors better. They represent a collection of scholarship that address some of the important questions in international development. They adopt a wide range of research methods to provide insight into what works, and what does not, in promoting the stipulated development goals.

Millennium development goals (MDGs) and sustainable development goals (SDGs) have significant implications for global development, in particular for African countries. This book seeks to assist Africa’s policy makers and political leaders, MNCs and NGOs, plus its increasingly heterogeneous media landscape, to understand and better respond or negotiate the evolving development environment of the 21st century. In this collection of nuanced essays, the contributors interrogate the relationship between the MDGs and SDGs in key areas of African development to enhance our understanding and knowledge of the evolving nature of development. They address issues of governance, agriculture, south-south cooperation in a context of foreign aid, natural resource governance and sustainable development, export diversification and economic growth as well as emerging topics such as the internet of things or the sharing economy, climate change, conflict and non-traditional security. The varied, yet interlinked foci present a holistic overview of Africa’s development aspirations, and ability to transform the SDGs’ universal aspirations into local realities. This book will be of use to academics and students in Development Studies, Contemporary African Studies, Political Science, Policy Studies and Geography, and should also appeal to policy makers and development practitioners.

A detailed examination of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the shift in governance strategy they represent. In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals built on and broadened the earlier Millennium Development Goals, but they also signaled a larger shift in governance strategies. The seventeen goals add detailed content to the concept of sustainable development, identify specific targets for each goal, and help frame a broader, more coherent, and transformative 2030 agenda. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to build a universal, integrated framework for action that reflects the economic, social, and planetary complexities of the twenty-first century. This book examines in detail the core characteristics of goal setting, asking when it is an appropriate governance strategy and how it differs from other approaches; analyzes the conditions under which a goal-oriented agenda can enable progress toward desired ends; and considers the practical challenges in implementation. Anthology from the year 2015 in the subject Social Studies (General), language: English, comment: The book contains 7 articles of academic staff, peer reviewed by Bugema International Multidisciplinary Research Conference slated on September 28-29, 2015. The conference was cancelled. We felt the need to disseminate the findings as the MDGs are coming to completion this September 2015. Evidence based data are needed to evaluate the past MDGs and to contribute for the next Sustainable Development Goals Agenda that will continue the 2000 MDGs direction., abstract: The September 2000 United Nations Millennium Declaration was never an option but a felt need for global development and sustainability in the aspects of poverty reduction, universal primary education, gender equality and women empowerment, child mortality reduction, maternal health improvement, fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, environmental sustainability and global partnership for development. Is the millennium development goals' path cleared for completion? Sustainability is the answer rather than end the MDGs. For this reason, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a new development agenda, has been conceived to continue in the next fifteen years what the MDGs have started and may have to be applied to all countries for societal peace, more job opportunities and a global agreement for climate change. The success of the MDGs and SDGs should be an obligation and a responsibility for everyone on this planet. There are numerous ways to get involved in every individual's way such as in education, research and social responsibility. With the good intention to contribute to the SDGs new agenda through empirical research, this book reflects some evidence based findings from seven studies done in Uganda and Philippines. Shaped from these empirical studies are the insights and recommendations meant to shed light and broaden the horizons of the policy experts involved in the transition from
