This book is a collection of lecture notes for the CIME course on "Multiscale and Adaptivity: Modeling, Numerics and Applications," held in Cetraro (Italy), in July 2009. Complex systems arise in several physical, chemical, and biological processes, in which length and time scales may span several orders of magnitude. Traditionally, scientists have focused on methods that are particularly applicable in only one regime, and knowledge of the system on one scale has been transferred to another scale only indirectly. Even with modern computer power, the complexity of such systems precludes their being treated directly with traditional tools, and new mathematical and computational instruments have had to be developed to tackle such problems. The outstanding and internationally renowned lecturers, coming from different areas of Applied Mathematics, have themselves contributed in an essential way to the development of the theory and techniques that constituted the subjects of the courses.

This edited volume highlights the scientific contributions of Volker Mehrmann, a leading expert in the area of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory. These mathematical research areas are strongly related and often occur in the same real-world applications. The main areas where such applications emerge are computational engineering and sciences, but increasingly also social sciences and economics. This book also reflects some of Volker Mehrmann's major career stages. Starting out working in the areas of numerical linear algebra (his first full professorship at TU Chemnitz was in "Numerical Algebra," hence the title of the book) and matrix theory, Volker Mehrmann has made significant contributions to these areas ever since. The highlights of these are discussed in Parts I and II of the present book. Often the development of new algorithms in numerical linear algebra is motivated by problems in system and control theory. These and his later major work on differential-algebraic equations, to which he together with Peter Kunkel made many groundbreaking contributions, are the topic of the chapters in Part III. Besides providing a scientific discussion of Volker Mehrmann's work and its impact on the development of several areas of applied mathematics, the individual chapters stand on their own as reference works for selected topics in the fields of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory.

This volume gathers contributions from participants of the Introductory School and the IHP thematic quarter on Numerical Methods for PDE, held in 2016 in Cargese (Corsica) and Paris, providing an opportunity to disseminate the latest results and envisage fresh challenges in traditional and new application fields. Numerical analysis applied to the approximate solution of PDEs is a key discipline in applied mathematics, and over the last few years, several new paradigms have appeared, leading to entire new families of discretization methods and solution algorithms. This book is intended for researchers in the field.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Mathematics and its Applications-2014, held from November 14-17, 2014, at Kuwait University, Safat, Kuwait. Papers contained in this volume cover various topics in pure and applied mathematics ranging from an introductory study of quotients and homomorphisms of C-systems, also known as contextual pre-categories, to the most important consequences of the so-called Fokas method. Also covered are multidisciplinary topics such as new structural and spectral matricial results, acousto-electromagnetic tomography method, a recent hybrid imaging technique, some numerical aspects of sonic-boom minimization, PDE eigenvalue problems, von Neumann entropy in graph theory, the relative entropy method for hyperbolic systems, conductances on grids, inverse problems in magnetohydrodynamics, location and size estimation of small rigid bodies using elastic far-fields, and the space-time fractional Schrödinger equation, just to cite a few. This book collects many of the presented papers, as plenary presentations, mini-symposia invited presentations, or contributed talks, from the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) 2017. The conference was organized by the University of Bergen, Norway from September 25 to 29, 2017. Leading experts in the field presented the latest results and ideas in the designing, implementation, and analysis of numerical algorithms as well as their applications to relevant, societal problems. ENUMATH is a series of conferences held every two years to provide a forum for discussing basic aspects and new trends in numerical mathematics and scientific and industrial applications. These discussions are upheld at the highest level of international expertise. The first ENUMATH conference was held in Paris in 1995 with successive conferences being held at various locations across Europe, including Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), lschia Porto (2001), Prague (2003), Santiago de Compostela (2005), Graz (2007), Uppsala (2009), Leicester (2011), Lausanne (2013), and Ankara (2015).

This volume collects papers based on plenary and invited talks given at the 50th Barrett Memorial Lectures on Approximation, Applications, and Analysis of Nonlocal, Nonlinear Models that was organized by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and held virtually in May 2021. The three-day meeting brought together experts from the computational, scientific, engineering, and mathematical communities who work with nonlocal models. These proceedings collect contributions and give a survey of the state of the art in computational practices, mathematical analysis, applications of nonlocal models, and explorations of new application domains. The volume benefits from the mixture of contributions by computational scientists, mathematicians, and application specialists. The content is suitable for graduate students as well as specialists working with nonlocal models and covers topics on fractional PDEs, regularity theory for kinetic equations, approximation theory for fractional diffusion, analysis of nonlocal diffusion model as a bridge between local and fractional PDEs, and more.
