The soul rejoices in perceiving harmonious sound; when the sound is not harmonious it is grieved. This book provides a new approach to the intersections between music and philosophy. Some contend that we must take into account the varying historical and cultural contexts of music, and that the idea of an essence of music is therefore a fantasy. Music as a Science of Mankind offers a philosophical and historical perspective on the intellectual representation of music in British eighteenth-century culture.
