When I was 13, my Grandma would babysit, even though I was just about the age I didn't need one. She knew I was gay, and we would watch movies, and order pizza. Then she would put me to bed with a fairy tale. Now, she changed them to be gay themed, for me. She was also crazy funny. And slightly off color. And was kinda like Aunt Clara from Bewitched. I never knew what to expect. To say I laughed like a lunatic would be an understatement. I have recreated as much as I could remember of her funny attempts in her wild way to make me feel that it was okay, to grow up and dream about finding a prince of my own. If I wanted to. I added my own spin to make them even funnier. Warning: These are gay comedy stories. With adult language and situations. Expect the unexpected, but laugh a lot I hope.

Once upon a time, in a little village in India, there lived an old woman. Everyone in the village called her Grandma. One day, Grandma received a letter from her daughter, who lived on the other side of the jungle. "Please come and visit me," said the letter. "I haven't seen you in so long. I miss you." And so, Grandma begins a perilous journey to the far side of the jungle. Can she use her keen wit to escape the jungle animals and make it safely home? Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's sharp, rhythmic retelling of this Bengali folktale is complimented perfectly by Susy Pilgrim Waters's brightly colored, captivating illustrations. Grandma and the Great Gourd is a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2013

I am a sixty-two-year-old grandmother of eleven and great-grandmother of four. In my middle fifties my husband became ill with Alzheimeras and I was the only care-giver. We became socially isolated from family and friends, along with being financially strapped. I was care-giving all the time and believe me, a person can get real tired of watching television and reading in-between all the work. So I decided to look for a creative outlet. I always enjoyed writing, which came in the form of college essays, personal experiences, dream logs, self-awareness and self-discovery classes. For me it seemed natural to start writing short stories for my grandchildren. It was easy to slip into the mind set of creativity because of regular meditation. I donat mind telling you, it was a great place to escape to when the harsh realities of life pressed in around me. My husband has since passed on, but I have continued writing stories for other family members and friends. Maybe this book can be an inspiration to others on what can be achieved when we are at our lowest and most desperate. To know we are able to take our positive creative energy and put it in the form of most any artistic endeavor, thus bringing out some of our hidden talent. Iam hoping this book will be of great encouragement to other people in similar circumstances.
