"Sir Edwin Lutyens is widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest architects. In a career of more than 50 years, spanning both the Victorian and Modern eras, Lutyens was prolific. His work ranged from great country houses, city commercial office buildings, his famous First World War memorials across Europe and Britain, and his magnum opus designs for New Delhi, built during the 1920s and 1930s. Lutyens' most celebrated works remain his magnificent country houses that so frequently adorned the pages of Country Life magazine, and in particular his houses of the period from the 1890s and 1900s. Sir Edwin Lutyens: The Arts & Crafts Houses brings together for the first time in new, wide-format all-colour photography, the definitive collection of over 40 of Lutyens' great houses, in which Lutyens ingeniously blended the style of the Arts and Crafts movement with his own inventive interpretation of the Classical language of architecture. The book features over 500 stunning current photographs, together with floor plans of the houses, and a fresh reinterpretation of Lutyens' enduring architectural genius."--

Adrian Tinniswood explains the Arts and Crafts movement's international influence by exploring the design, decoration, furnishings, and gardens of town and country houses the world over. Chapters cover themes such as: William Morris and his disciples; houses built by architects for themselves; the distinctive American response to the Arts and Crafts style; and the movement's relationship with the disappearing rural community. The book includes a broad range of houses, including the Red House in Kent, England, that Philip Webb built for William Morris in 1859 and Frank Lloyd Wright's Storer House in Los Angeles, completed in the 1930s. Within each chapter, the author considers, alongside the houses, Arts and Crafts themes such as literature, magazines, gardens, and furniture.

This book offers the first full-scale examination of the architecture associated with the Arts and Crafts movement that spread throughout New England at the turn of the twentieth century. Although interest in the Arts and Crafts movement has grown since the 1970s, the literature on New England has focused on craft production. Meister traces the history of the movement from its origins in mid-nineteenth-century England to its arrival in the United States and describes how Boston architects including H. H. Richardson embraced its tenets in the 1870s and 1880s. She then turns to the next generation of designers, examining buildings by twelve of the region's most prominent architects, eleven men and a woman, who assumed leadership roles in the Society of Arts and Crafts, founded in Boston in 1897. Among them are Ralph Adams Cram, Lois Lilley Howe, Charles Maginnis, and H. Langford Warren. They promoted designs based on historical precedent and the region's heritage while encouraging well-executed ornament. Meister also discusses revered cultural personalities who influenced the architects, notably Ralph Waldo Emerson and art historian Charles Eliot Norton, as well as contemporaries who shared their concerns, such as Louis Brandeis. Conservative though the architects were in the styles they favored, they also were forward-looking, blending Arts and Crafts values with Progressive Era idealism. Open to new materials and building types, they made lasting contributions, with many of their designs now landmarks honored in cities and towns across New England.

The Arts & Crafts movement that burgeoned at the beginning of the 20th century is being revived and incorporated into residential architecture, and the finest of these homes are presented in New Arts & Crafts Houses. Whether reflecting the precedents of such diverse turn-of-the-century architects as Gustav Stickley and the Greene Bros. in the United States or William Morris and C.F. Voysey in England, the new Arts & Crafts houses incorporate similar notions of harmony, individualism, cohesive décor, and simplicity of style that have strong appeal to today's architects and homeowners. The 20 houses in this book illustrate, through full-color photography and detailed floor and site plans, the range of new Arts & Crafts architecture, from contemporary bungalow vacation homes to larger residences. Readers interested in Arts & Crafts design will discover why the styles and features of this early 20th century artistic and philosophical movement are timeless -- and how today's architects and designers are using them to enhance contemporary residences.
