Noodle Bear

In a kid-friendly debut from a TV animator, Bear finds fame as a champion eater of his favorite food — but realizes he’s hungry for his old friends. Bear is so crazy about noodles that when he wakes up from his winter sleep he is already craving them! But his cave is bare, with no noodles to be found. His friends try to distract him with their own treats, but Bear decides it’s time to set off to the big city to seek his fortune as a game-show contestant and a sure fill of his prized food. But what’s the sense of becoming a big TV star (and having all the noodles he can eat) when there’s nobody to share it with?

Noodle-eating fame is all very well, but there's no place like home. Noodle Bear is crazy about noodles. His best friend, Fox, brings him other delicious treats when he's a no-show at her party but he's so noodle obsessed that doesn't he notice them. And when he's run out of noodles, his only thought is to go to the big city and become a contestant on the TV game show, "Noodle Knockout". Of course, he becomes a surprise star with more noodles than he can eat. But no amount of noodles and fame can fill the empty space where home and friends should be.

Impossible Presence brings together new work in film studies, critical theory, art history, and anthropology for a multifaceted exploration of the continuing proliferation of visual images in the modern era. It also asks what this proliferation—and the changing technologies that support it—mean for the ways in which images are read today and how they communicate with viewers and spectators. Framed by Terry Smith's introduction, the essays focus on two kinds of strangeness involved in experiencing visual images in the modern era. The first, explored in the book's first half, involves the appearance of oddities or phantasmagoria in early photographs and cinema. The second type of strangeness involves art from marginalized groups and indigenous peoples, and the communicative formations that result from the trafficking of images between people from vastly different cultures. With a stellar list of contributors, Impossible Presence offers a wide-ranging look at the fate of the visual image in modernity, modern art, and popular culture.
