For over twenty years the Nordic Council of Ministers Arctic Co-operation Programme has contributed to enhancing knowledge about the Arctic region The current Nordic Arctic Co-operation Programme 2018–2021 is focused on four overall areas: People, Planet and Prosperity as well as Partnerships as a cross cutting theme. Closely connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, the programme supports international research projects and other collaborative efforts to support sustainable development in the Arctic. This folder gives a short introduction to the programme with examples of project results.

Nordic Partnerships for the Arctic, the Nordic Council of Ministers' Arctic Co-operation Programme 2018–2021, is the eighth programme of its kind since 1996. The Arctic is a rapidly developing region with a need for both conservation and development. Continuous, systematic and stable co-operation is a prerequisite for the type of development required in the Arctic. Nordic Partnerships for the Arctic is a contribution to those endeavours.The Nordic Council of Ministers has a policy objective of generating sustainable development in the Arctic. Nordic Partnerships for the Arctic 2018–2021 strives to achieve a sustainable Arctic and revolves around four priority themes: Peoples, Planet, Prosperity, Partnerships.

The Arctic’s growing strategic importance in world affairs and the increasing attention it receives from states inside and outside the region warrants greater cooperation and understanding of practical measures for maintaining regional security and stability. Approaches that seek to systematically isolate one of the Arctic states, particularly Russia, will only contribute to mistrust and impede prospects for regional stability. The product of a three-year project by twenty Arctic scholars and practitioners, The Newport Manual on Arctic Security sets out thirty international principles of security applicable to this maritime region. It addresses topics related to awareness, confidence-building measures, and capabilities. An extensive commentary accompanies each principle, which sets forth its basis during peacetime, explains practical barriers and solutions to implementation, and outlines critical disagreements within the group. Transparency, cooperation, and communication provide the basis for the principles and commentary. This book is policy—and politics—neutral and does not represent the official position, plans, or policies of any state or international organization, including the U.S. Naval War College. The project’s leadership was committed to objectivity and has included the views of all participants to reach consensus on future prospects for cooperation and agreement.

This book examines the nature of the ‘energy curriculum’ in Arctic Higher Education and provides invaluable data and new models to assess levels of Sustainable Development Literacy. For a long time, the Nordic countries have been a region of peace, with the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully among themselves, and a region for peace, actively promoting peace globally. Although efforts to actively brand the Nordic region are ongoing, the Nordic Peace brand is an area with untapped potential. The Nordics have rich traditions for working together on peace and conflict resolution. These joint efforts have grown organically and informally from like-mindedness, letting the common Nordic culture and ways of working foster integration among them where relevant. The people working in the Nordic countries on Nordic cooperation and peace recognize the potential of strengthening the Nordic Peace brand. One area of special potential is increasing focus on the shared Nordic priorities of prevention and the women, peace and security agenda as part of the Nordic Peace brand.
