North Sea

This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evaluation and review process similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of our changing climate, discussing a wide range of topics including past, current and future climate change, and climate-related changes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It also explores the impact of climate change on socio-economic sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, coastal zone management, coastal protection, urban climate, recreation/tourism, offshore activities/energy, and air pollution.

The nations bordering the North Sea have always been engaged in a dialogue with water. The sea is the source of livelihoods as well as leisure, industry as well as relaxation. Holidaymakers are not the only ones drawn to the seaside: the currency of both painters and photographers is light, and under Northern skies the best light is often to be found where land joins water. In addition, coastal locations often give urban artists an opportunity to observe life in the raw. North Sea provides the overarching theme for this showcase of vintage and contemporary photography, accompanied by paintings and songs, poetry and prose. Its pages capture both the sublimity of nature and a cast of human subjects, whose lives are placed in perspective by the vastness of the sea. In spite of the changes wrought by history, the fascination of the frontier between land and water remains timeless, and these images stand as a striking testament to the relationship between the sea and the people who live and work alongside it.

In light of the North Sea's major role in today's world petroleum market, these essays examine the structure of the market, the international framework and tax regime, the function and mechanism of forward dealings, and price behavior.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Sym posium on North Sea Dynamics which was held in Hamburg, August 31 - September 4, 1981. More than 150 participants from 10 coun tries were present at the Symposium. Of the 58 lectures given, 45 are printed in this book. The manuscripts were reviewed by an international advisory board. The main goal of the organizers was to bring together as many active researchers as possible in this very general field of North Sea dynarnics, transcending the boundaries of the countries and the various disciplines involved, in order to discuss the main problems and future trends. In the ten years since the last comparable meeting in Aviemore, Scotland, several large interna tional experiments (JONSDAP '73 and '76, JONSWAP '73, '75 and '77, MARSEN '79) and new developments in modelling promised a rewarding exchange of ideas. In addition to the physical disci plines, biologists and geologists are increasingly able to pre sent quantitative analyses.

The author's well established guide to the East Coast of England from Great Yarmouth to Dover and corresponding continental coasts between Calais and Den Helder has undergone major revision for this fifth edition. Throughout, the text and charts have been fully updated. Since the fourth edition there has been a continued growth in maritime commercial traffic and in the associated dangers of collision. The major event in the southern North Sea was the initiation in July 2007 of a new traffic system for the Sunk area of the Thames Estuary which includes three Traffic Separation Schemes, two Precautionary Areas, two ship anchorage areas, a 'Two-way Route' for local traffic and a recommended route for North Sea ferries. Similarly important changes have been made to the traffic schemes in the approaches to Hoek van Holland during 2008. Full details of both these developments are supported by new plans.

The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.

Die Europäische Nordsee Energie Allianz (‚ENSEA‘) ist ein von der Europäischen Kommission gefördertes Projekt, welches im Rahmen des FP7-Programms „Kapazitäten-Wissensregionen“ zwischen dem 01.10.2012 und dem 31.12.2015 durchgeführt wurde. Hauptziel ist der gezielte Aufbau internationaler Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und öffentlicher Verwaltung in regionalen Energiesektoren (Triple-Helix-Ansatz) und die Entwicklung von Wissen über Energiesystemintegration innerhalb internationaler Regionen. Partner des ENSEA-Verbundes sind die nördlichen Niederlande, der Nordwesten Deutschlands, der Südwesten Norwegens und Schottland. Die Vereinigung und Analyse der Innovationskapazitäten der Partnerregionen, die Zusammenführung bestehenden Energie-Know-hows, die Abstimmung von regionalen, nationalen und europäischen Forschungsprogrammen sowie die Verstetigung der Zusammenarbeit sind die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der in dieser Schriftenreihe vorgestellten Aktivitäten. Ergänzend wird ein Maßnahmenkatalog für die Politikentwicklung vorgestellt, welcher im Rahmen der ENSEA-Abschlusskonferenz in Edinburgh erarbeitet wurde. ENSEA leistet damit einen signifikanten Beitrag zur Integration erneuerbarer Energien der Nordsee in das bestehende Onshore-Energiesystem.
