This anthology, which is the first of its kind ever on Ethiopian literature, aspires to provide insights into a body of literature which had been marginalized more than other post-colonial literatures. The articles collected here trace and analyze the development of Ethiopian languages and literatures from Ge'ez to the first Amharic novel, T'obbia. In an attempt to create balance, effort has also been made to incorporate representative critical works from almost all modern literary forms. This collection intends to provide readers with a general insight and an increased awareness of the richness of Ethiopian literature. The volume brings together a number of scholars and practitioners of the world whose interest in the subject matter is rivaled only by an equally compelling interest in reading and situating Ethiopian literature in the wider context of world literature. In this sense, other scholars and interested readers will have at their disposal the means/tools to engage in inter- and intra-literary studies. Since this volume has a pre-cursorial contour, and since it is the first, it is hoped that it will engender discussion and pique the interest of the reading public.

This book presents new insights into the production and reception of Irish drama, its internationalisation and political influences, within a pivotal period of Irish cultural and social change. From the 1950s onwards, Irish theatre engaged audiences within new theatrical forms at venues from the Pike Theatre, the Project Arts Centre, and the Gate Theatre, as well as at Ireland’s national theatre, the Abbey. Drawing on newly released and digitised archival records, this book argues for an inclusive historiography reflective of the formative impacts upon modern Irish theatre as recorded within marginalised performance histories. This study examines these works' experimental dramaturgical impacts in terms of production, reception, and archival legacies. The book, framed by the device of ‘archival memory’, serves as a means for scholars and theatre-makers to inter-contextualise existing historiography and to challenge canon formation. It also presents a new social history of Irish theatre told from the fringes of history and reanimated through archival memory.

Dele Layiwola, Dapo Adelugba and Sonny Oti trace the beginnings of the School of Drama in 1960, at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, where Martin Banham played a key and influential role in the growth of thriving Nigerian theatre repetoire and simulaneously encouraging the creation of a new theatre based on traditional Nigerian theatre forms. This comparative approach is taken up in Dele Layiwola's study of ritual and drama in the context of various traditions worldwide, while Oyin Ogunba presents a lucid picture of the complex use of theatre space in Yoruba ritual dramadar drama. Harsh everyday realitites, both physical and political, are graphically demonstrated by Robert McClaren (Zimbabwe) and Oga Steve Abah (Nigeria) who both show surprising and alarming links between extreme actual experiences and theatre creation and performance. The texts of the two plays - When Criminals Turn Judges by Ola Rotimi, The Hand that Feeds the King by Wale Ogunyemi, are followed by Austin O. Asagba's study of oral tradition and text in plays by Osofisan and Agbeyegbe, and Frances Harding's study on power, language, and imagery in Wole Soyinka's plays.
