This book is about the Old Norse god Odin. It includes references to all occurrences of Odin in the Old Norse/Icelandic texts, including Saxo’s Gesta Danorum, the eddic poems, Snorri’s Edda, and Ynglinga saga and analyses the high medieval reception and literary representations of Odin rather than the religious character of the god. This is the only existing study of Odin in all the Old Norse/Icelandic texts and applies a contextual method: the different guises of Odin are studied on the basis of the various textual contexts and on their background in the literary and Christian intellectual milieu of the time. Contrary to existing studies, this method is non-reductive in that it does not aim at providing a synthesis about Odin’s original nature on the basis of the differing textual uses of Odin in the Middle Ages. The book argues that the perceived complexity of Odin, often highlighted in research, is first and foremost a function of the complex textual material spanning a wide variety of genres each with its particular literary conventions and of the reception of Odin in early modern and modern mythological studies.

First published in 1898, this guide to the primitive lore of Scandinavia recounts the creation of the world from the earliest fog-country and fire-land, the birth of the gods, their ascendancy, and their twilight. It profiles the chief gods and their attendant myths, including the all-wise Odin, father of the gods; hammer-wielding Thor; Baldur, the beautiful and wise; and malicious Loki, the devil of the North. It chronicles forms of worship and religious life, plus the most famous of the hero sagas: the Volsungs, the Helgi sagas; Volund the smith; the Hjathningar, and Beowulf. Unabridged republication of the A. Clinton Crowell translation as published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company, New York, 1913. Index. 21 black-and-white illustrations.

ALERT: Do not get this if you seek tradition. The traditions are wrong. Alien priests infiltrated and created false mythologies based upon our celebrity ancestors. This fact and documented in The Oera Linda Book. The archetype of Wotan is part of us. Wotan and Odin began as two unlike celebrities 1300 years or so separated from each other. The Book of Odin is not so much a scholarly treatise as an instruction manual or handbook. Even though it is meant for the Children of Wotan, it is named after Odin with a view to those who, in their bewilderment, still hold the 2 ancient celebrities to be 1 man. Are you a Child of Wotan? What is our destiny? What must we know to be successful and to win?
