I was deterred, however, from a hasty reproduction of the work, by the great diversity of opinion prevalent upon the points at issue, and I have preferred to wait till the horizon of scientific controversy was somewhat cleared, and the tangled skein of medical psychology partly unravelled. In the arrangement of my subject, I have followed very much the plan of the first edition, beginning with a condensed bibliographical sketch of the contributions of British, American, and continental writers.
