On Reflection

Ellen Rose seeks to initiate a much-needed discussion about what reflection is and should be. The word crops up repeatedly in the discourse of teaching and learning, but its meaning is often vague. True reflection -- deep, sustained thought that takes place in conditions of solitude and silence -- has been undermined by new technologies that speed up the flow information and the pace of life, as well as by contemporary schooling that unreflectively embraces technological and market imperatives in the name of outcomes, efficiencies, and the preparation of a global workforce. Drawing on a wide range of thinkers, past and present, Rose outlines the important role reflective thought can play in the classroom and in the world at large, and makes a powerful case for slowing down and returning to our thoughts.

How can we tell the difference between a reflection and the real thing? How does a reflection betray its identity? Why is it that when we look at a mirror we can see either our reflection or the mirror but not both at the same time? How and when do we learn to recognise our own reflection? What does a reflective surface look like and how can we distinguish it from a non-reflective surface? Why is it that certain paintings may be turned upside down and still be visually acceptable? More than this, he suggests that the attempt to solve these problems by appealing to reflection saddles us with a mystical view of the powers of reflective self-examination. Recognition of this fact motivates a search for a demystified view of the nature of reflection. To this end, Kornblith offers a detailed examination of views about knowledge, reasoning, freedom, and normativity in order to better understand the motivations for extolling self-reflective examination. He explores both the logic of these views, and the psychological commitments they involve. In the final chapter, he offers a more realistic view of reflection, which draws on dual process approaches to cognition.
