The Ojibwa Indians of the Great Lakes figured out they could attract deer by smoking wild aster in a pipe, the smell of which was like the scent of a deer's hooves. Other tribes -- such as the Choctaws and Cherokees in the Southeast -- would carry skinned-out deer heads on their belts, which they could wear over their heads whenever they needed to make a stalk (this is no longer an advisable, or legal, technique). They used decoys and calls, and they knew that banging a pair of antlers together could summon a buck during the rut. In this book we have tried to compile some of the best information and most interesting pieces written about deer in Sports Afield since the magazine was founded in 1887. There were not as many deer to hunt back then, but over the last quarter century deer populations have boomed in nearly every state but Alaska and Hawaii, and so have the articles written about them. Nick McLean was one of the most acclaimed camera operators in American cinema of the 1970s, during which time he shot many classics of the New Hollywood movement including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Heaven Can Wait, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Deer Hunter, Marathon Man, and Being There. As a cinematographer throughout the 1980s, McLean would film blockbusters such as Cannonball Run II, City Heat, The Goonies, and Short Circuit before being lured into television to photograph some of the biggest shows in town, including Evening Shade, Cybill, and the pop culture phenomenon Friends, for which he was thrice Emmy-nominated.

Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter was met with both critical and commercial success upon its release in 1978. However, it was also highly controversial and came to be seen as a powerful statement on the human cost of America's longest war and as a colonialist glorification of anti-Asian violence. Brad Prager's study of the film considers its significance as a war movie and contextualizes its critical reception. Drawing on an archive of contemporaneous materials, as well as an in-depth analysis of the film's lighting, mise-en-scène, multiple cameras and shifting depths of field, Prager examines how the film simultaneously presents itself as a work of cinematic realism, while problematically blurring the lines between fact and fiction. While Cimino felt he had no responsibility to historical truth, depicting a highly stylized version of his own fantasies about the Vietnam War, Prager argues that The Deer Hunter's formal elements were used to bolster his troubling depictions of war and race. Finally, comparing the film with later depictions of US-led intervention such as Albert and Allen Hughes's Dead Presidents (1995) and Spike Lee's Da Five Bloods (2020), Prager illuminates The Deer Hunter's major presumptions, blind spots and omissions, while also presenting a case for its classic status.
