Mathematical optimization is the selection of the best element in a set with respect to a given criterion. Optimization has become one of the most used tools in control theory to compute control laws, adjust parameters (tuning), estimate states, fit model parameters, find conditions in order to fulfill a given closed-loop property, among others. Optimization also plays an important role in the design of fault detection and isolation systems to prevent safety hazards and production losses that require the detection and identification of faults, as early as possible to minimize their impacts by implementing real-time fault detection and fault-tolerant systems. Recently, it has been proven that many optimization problems with convex objective functions and linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints can be solved easily and efficiently using existing software, which increases the flexibility and applicability of the control algorithms. Therefore, real-world control systems need to comply with several conditions and constraints that have to be taken into account in the problem formulation, which represents a challenge in the application of the optimization algorithms. This book offers an overview of the state-of-the-art of the most advanced optimization techniques and their applications in control engineering.

The shipping industry handles over 90% of the global trade volume and is responsible for approximately 3% of global CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, trade by the shipping industry is expected to increase by up to 130% by 2050 compared to 2008. At the same time, the goal is to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from the shipping industry to half of the 2008 level by 2050. In support of this goal, this thesis is concerned with a comprehensive approach for optimizing the ship's operation, i.e., an optimization approach that simultaneously involves route selection, energy management, propeller pitch, and engine control. In addition, this thesis also analyses the application of wind propulsion systems. The optimization of the ship's operation is implemented in the form of Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods. The use of RL-based methods to simultaneously optimize various aspects of the ship's trajectory and controls is a novel approach compared to the current state-of-art and embodies this thesis' inherent innovation. The results specifically highlight the importance of parallelizing route optimization with the optimization of other control aspects. Ultimately, it is found that the solution emanating from a purely RL-based approach can be further enhanced when the optimized route, speed, and power profiles are used to perform individual DP-based optimizations on the energy management in a post-processing step.

Man-Machine-Environment System Engineering: Proceedings of the 21st Conference on MMESE is the academic showcase of best research papers selected from more than 500 submissions each year. From this book reader will learn the best research topics and the latest development trend in MMESE design theory and other human-centered system application.MMESE focus mainly on the relationship between Man, Machine and Environment. It studies the optimum combination of man-machine-environment systems. In the system, the Man means the working people as the subject in the workplace (e.g. operator, decision-maker); the Machine means the general name of any object controlled by the Man (including tool, Machinery, Computer, system and technology), the Environment means the specially working conditions under which Man and Machine occupy together(e.g. temperature, noise, vibration, hazardous gases etc.). The three goals of the optimization of the system are safety, efficiency and economy. In 1981 with direct support from one of the greatest modern Chinese scientists, Qian Xuesen, Man-Machine-Environment System Engineering (MMESE), the integrated and advanced science research topic was established in China by Professor Shengzhao Long. In the letter to Shengzhao Long, in October 22nd, 1993, Qian Xuesen wrote: “You have created a very important modern science subject and technology in China!”.

This book describes the stochastic and predictive control modelling of electrical systems that can meet the challenge of forecasting energy requirements under volatile conditions. The global electrical grid is expected to face significant energy and environmental challenges such as greenhouse emissions and rising energy consumption due to the electrification of heating and transport. Today, the distribution network includes energy sources with volatile demand behaviour, and intermittent renewable generation. This has made it increasingly important to understand low voltage demand behaviour and requirements for optimal energy management systems to increase energy savings, reduce peak loads, and reduce gas emissions. Electrical load forecasting is a key tool for understanding and anticipating the highly stochastic behaviour of electricity demand, and for developing optimal energy management systems. Load forecasts, especially of the probabilistic variety, can support more informed planning and management decisions, which will be essential for future low carbon distribution networks. For storage devices, forecasts can optimise the appropriate state of control for the battery. There are limited books on load forecasts for low voltage distribution networks and even fewer demonstrations of how such forecasts can be integrated into the control of storage. This book presents material in load forecasting, control algorithms, and energy saving and provides practical guidance for practitioners using two real life examples: residential networks and cranes at a port terminal.

This book puts forward a technological system for the construction of subsea tunnel using drilling and blasting method. Taking the water-induced disaster as the core risk, the safety guarantee system for large cross-sectional subsea tunnels is established. The composite grouting technology referred to ground reinforcement and water plugging is established, which breaks through the technical bottleneck of subsea tunnel construction in highly permeable strata. The process control theory based on water inrush mechanism is created, which gets rid of the over-dependence on engineering experience for disaster control of submarine tunnel. An active control waterproof drainage system based on the synergy of reinforcement ring and support system is invented to solve the contradiction between the control of water displacement and water pressure. The above-mentioned achievements have been successfully applied in the first three large cross-sectional subsea tunnels in China, and have played a key role in the construction safety. The proposed technological system can improve the overall construction level of subsea tunnel, which can provide reference for the design and construction of subsea tunnels, especially for those crossing through weakness zones.
