Organizing Smart Buildings And Cities

The United Nations included sustainable cities and communities in its 2030 SDGs. Cities and, on a smaller scale, neighborhoods, building managers and firms are now adopting technologies and information systems to help achieve the energy, economic, social and environmental transition. This volume gathers contributions on the key organizational success factors for this transition. To do so, it analyzes the role of information systems, use of data, and technological assistance solutions from multiple perspectives. The goal is to develop a framework that can successfully apply information systems to organizational and environmental issues for smart cities and smart buildings. Accordingly, the book addresses living-lab experiment evaluation techniques, and provides critical analyses of the role of the environment, context and users’ behavioral responses. In addition, it discusses key questions on the efficient management of resources, need for appropriate IT solutions, and employing co-creation with users to improve planning and organization.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th PLAIS EuroSymposium 2021 which was held in Sopot, Poland, on September 23, 2021. The objective of the PLAIS EuroSymposium 2021 is to promote and develop high quality research on all issues related to digital transformation. It provides a forum for IS researchers and practitioners in Europe and beyond to interact, collaborate, and develop this field. The 10 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 34 submissions. They were organized in topical sections named: digital enterprises; smart cities; digital education; and innovative methods in data and process analysis.

Das Energiekonzept und die Beschlüsse der Bundesregierung zur Energiewende sind wichtige Weichenstellungen für die Gestaltung des zukünftigen Energiesystems. So soll u. a. die Energieeffizienz in dem Maße gesteigert werden, dass bis zum Jahr 2050 nur noch die Hälfte des Primärenergieverbrauchs im Vergleich zum Jahr 2008 benötigt wird. In Deutschland leben rund 75 % der Menschen in Städten. Daher sind Städte und Agglomerationen besondere Lebens-, Wirtschafts- und Kulturräume. Als solche verlangen sie nach einem zukunftsfähigen Energiesystem und müssen in hohem Maße energieeffizient ausgestaltet sein. Besonders relevant für die Steigerung der Energieeffizienz ist der Gebäudesektor: In den Wohn- und Nichtwohngebäuden bundesweit entstehen rund 35 % des Endenergieverbrauchs, etwa drei Viertel davon in Form von Wärme. Die von der Bundesregierung beschlossene Energiewende, also der Umbau der deutschen Energieversorgung auf Basis hoher Effizienz und mit weitgehender Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien, kann deshalb nur gelingen, wenn diese Wende nicht nur im Strom-, sondern auch im Wärmemarkt umgesetzt wird (sogenannte "Wärmewende"). Mit Blick auf das energie- und klimapolitische Ziel eines nahezu klimaneutralen Gebäudebestands bis zum Jahr 2050 sind neben einer gesteigerten Energieeffizienz die erneuerbaren Energien in weit größerem Maße in den Wärmesektor zu integrieren. Städte und Agglomerationen bieten aufgrund der großen Hebelwirkung die Möglichkeit, technologische und gesellschaftliche Innovationen ungleich schneller und wirksamer in die Praxis umzusetzen und damit die energiepolitischen Ziele der Bundesregierung zu erfüllen.

This book covers a domain that is significantly impacted by the growth of soft computing. Internet of Things (IoT)-related applications are gaining much attention with more and more devices which are getting connected, and they become the potential components of some smart applications. Thus, a global enthusiasm has sparked over various domains such as health, agriculture, energy, security, and retail. So, in this book, the main objective is to capture this multifaceted nature of IoT and machine learning in one single place. According to the contribution of each chapter, the book also provides a future direction for IoT and machine learning research. The objectives of this book are to identify different issues, suggest feasible solutions to those identified issues, and enable researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to interact with each other regarding emerging technologies related to IoT and machine learning. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Paris Climate Agreement are examples of initiatives where countries show recognition of their interconnected interests and goals. This is particularly evident in the case of global environmental issues because they require global decision-making. The emergence of global environmental issues such as climate change, marine pollution and biodiversity loss has brought new challenges to governance and requires political support and innovation of global public policies. In addition, many social problems arise because of the environmental crisis.
