Orientation Programs For New Teachers

The New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) has been designed to support the growth and professional development of new teachers. It is the second step in a continuum of professional development for teachers to support effective teaching, learning, and assessment practices, building on and complementing the first step: pre-service education programs. It provides another full year of professional support so that new teachers can develop the requisite skills and knowledge that will enable them to achieve success as experienced teachers in Ontario. This manual is designed to be used in conjunction with resources, forms, and reports that are available in electronic format on the Internet. The manual provides information about the requirements and effective practices associated with the orientation, mentoring, and professional development and training elements of the New Teacher Induction Program.--Document.

Nine articles by California educators are included in this guidebook for the planning and implementation of beginning teacher support programs, with a focus on improving teacher quality and retention. An explicit relationship between the conceptual framework and the operational program increases the effectiveness of such programs. Mitchell and David Hough; and (9) "Beginning Teacher Assessment Activities and Developments in California," by Gary D. Estes, Kendyll Stansbury, and Claudia Long.
