This invaluable and well-presented text brings together previously fragmented or incompletely elucidated data on the impressive recent advances in orthopedic nuclear medicine. The book begins by acquainting the readers with various anatomic, physiologic, pathologic and technical concepts crucial to understanding orthopedic nuclear medicine and its utilization in clinical practice. Subsequent chapters detail the diagnosis of skeletal infections, trauma, vascular disorders, metabolic and neoplastic bone diseases, soft tissue calcifications and joint disorders. A separate section is devoted to the use of radionuclides in the treatment of bone and joint diseases. A unique feature of this richly illustrated volume is its comprehensive and clinically oriented approach. The book will prove invaluable to all with an interest in diagnostic and therapeutic orthopedics, including radiologists, orthopedists, rheumatologists, pediatricians, other clinicians and nuclear medicine professionals.

This book, written by authors with national and international reputations in the field, covers all aspects of radionuclide and hybrid bone imaging. Introductory sections present the basic science and consider the current status and limitations of conventional radiological techniques. The underlying principles of PET-CT and SPECT-CT are carefully explained, and the value of different PET and SPECT tracers, assessed. The role of single- and dual-modality approaches in the imaging of benign bone diseases and malignancies is then discussed in detail in a series of well-illustrated chapters. The pathologies addressed include metabolic bone disease, arthritis, bone and joint infections, primary bone and soft tissue tumors, and metastases from breast and prostate cancer. A further section considers the role of bone scintigraphy in the pediatric patient, and the closing chapters focus on miscellaneous subjects, including bone densitometry and radionuclide targeted therapy.

As chairman of the European Association of Nuclear Medi cine (EANM) 2001 annual meeting, I tried to reach two goals: a "universal nuclear medicine" congress where all people could speak and learn using the same language, and a full exploration of the possibility of making a diagnosis through global imaging. I am personally convinced that nuclear med icine techniques in the detection of infection and inflamma tion are essential, and in the near future their role and clinical impact will be impressive. As stated during the meeting, this topic will be one of the major and expanding fields of interest for nuclear medicine. During the post-congress meetings organized in Capri by Alberto Signore and Mauro Liberatore for each topic, there was a leading expert for the clinical, radiological and nuclear medicine aspects. This interaction was crucial for the quality of the discussion and the definition of flow charts that will be useful for all the medical community. These meetings, where for each topic there is full coverage of all the aspects of imaging, are, in my opinion, the most fruitful and useful for the progression and diffusion of nu clear medicine procedures. In the fifth edition of this highly successful book, the author once again aims to equip the reader with up-to-date information that will facilitate accurate diagnosis of bone and joint diseases by means of combined use of scintigraphy and radiology. Two entirely new chapters have been added, one on the use of 18F-NaF PET/CT and the other on gamma correction scan diagnosis of bone trabecular microfracture and microcontusion as well as bone edema and hemorrhage. Further topics covered for the first time include enthesopathies, myositis, soft tissue diseases, cryptic bones, and differential diagnosis. Individual chapters have been updated and rearranged to reflect the latest advances in imaging diagnosis. As before, a vast number of state of the art gamma correction pinhole bone scans and corroborative conventional radiographs and CT, MRI, and/or ultrasound images are presented side by side. In this new edition, extension of the application of gamma correction to other imaging methods such as MRI and CT and the solution of the halation problem are necessarily addressed. This fifth edition of Combined Scintigraphic and Radiographic Diagnosis of Bone and Joint Diseases will be essential reading for practitioners and researchers in nuclear medicine, radiology, orthopedic surgery, pathology, anatomy, and imaging sciences at large.

Nuclear medicine imaging in the musculoskeletal system with its ability to assess disease activities has contributed to accurate diagnosis and improved medical and surgical treatment. Several nuclear medicine textbooks and case studies in forms of atlases have been published so far, but there seems to be no in-depth nuclear medicine imaging atlas focused on diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Therefore, the authors have written about common cases as well as rare musculoskeletal disorders for which various imaging techniques of nuclear medicine (bone scan, SPECT, SPECT/CT, PET/CT, PET/MR, etc.) are useful based on their clinical experience in many different hospitals. This book intends to share the experiences of the authors with nuclear medicine and radiology residents and board specialists, and to help other clinicians who manage musculoskeletal disorders, such as orthopedic and rheumatology, through various cases of musculoskeletal disorders by providing algorithmic imaging utilization to support their patient care.
