Neurotology is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating neurological conditions of the inner ear and related structures. There have been many recent advances in neurotology that have been published in general medicine, otolaryngology and neurology journals. This comprehensive book will aggregate this information to provide a more complete picture of the state of the field and will include the authors’ own clinical experience. There is a recent marked increase in interest in neurotology, manifested by the clinical experiences and research-publication work of otolaryngologists, neurologists, neuro-ophtalmologists, audiologists and physiotherapists. As a result, this will be a completely state-of-the-art work that includes all up-to-date neurophysiological data related to the vestibular system. It has been estimated that 10% of patients that present at an emergency clinic have vestibular disorders, including vertigo, and these disorders are frequently a cause of falls in elderly patients. On the other hand, many physicians treat their patients with vertigo with vestibular blockers, which treat the symptoms but do not cure the disorders. We feel that it is important to supply a source of information on the vestibular system and balance disorders, and this title will do that in a comprehensive manner. This title will be an ideal reference for the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders for otolaryngologists, neurologists, neuro-ophtalmologists, audiologists and physical therapists.

The first part of the MIE 2008 conference theme - eHealth Beyond the Horizon - highlights the expectations for the future of ehealth and raises the question: What sort of developments in ehealth services can we imagine emerging above the horizon in the years to come? EHealth Beyond the Horizon contains a good number of high-quality papers giving different perspectives of this future, some of them already available today in picot scale, some of them outlined in visions. The second part of the theme - Get IT There - has triggered a large number of papers describing how to create, evaluate, adjust and deliver products and deploy services in healthcare organizations for the necessary information technology as a basis for the ehealth applications that are essential in order to respond to the challenges of the health systems. The papers in the proceedings are grouped by themes according to the submission categories and the supplied keywords. As the last theme, three doctoral students from different areas of medical informatics were selected to present and discuss their research under the guidance of a panel of distinguished research faculties.

The 2nd International Symposium on Medical Data Analysis (ISMDA 2001) was the continuation of the successful ISMDA 2000, a conference held in Fra- furt, Germany, in September 2000. The ISMDA conferences were conceived to integrate interdisciplinary research from scienti?c ?elds such as statistics, s- nal processing, medical informatics, data mining, and biometrics for biomedical data analysis. A number of academic and professional people from those ?elds, including computer scientists, statisticians, physicians, engineers, and others, - alized that new approaches were needed to apply successfully all the traditional techniques, methods, and tools of data analysis to medicine. ISMDA 2001, as its predecessor, aimed to provide an international forum for sharing and exchanging original research ideas and practical development ex- riences. This year we broadened the scope of the conference, to included methods for image analysis and bioinformatics. Both are exciting scienti?c research ?elds and it was clear to the scienti?c committee that they had to be included in the areas of interest. Medicine has been one of the most di?cult application areas for computing. The number and importance of the di?erent issues involved suggests why many data analysis researchers ?nd the medical domain such a challenging ?eld. New interactive approaches are needed to solve these problems.
