Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Excerpt from The Quest of Glory The Austrian guns had ceased with the early sunset, and the desolate city of Prague was silent, encompassed by the enemy and the hard, continuous cold of a Bohemian December: in the hall of Vladislav in the Hradcany, that ancient palace of ancient kings that rose above the town, several French officers wrapped in heavy cloaks were walking up and down, as they had done night after night since the dragging siege began. In the vast spaces of the huge pillarless hall with the high arched Gothic roof, bare walls and floor, imperfectly lit by a few low-placed lamps, their figures looked slight to insignificance, and the sound of their lowered voices was a mere murmur in the great frozen stillness. At one end of the hall rose a tall carved wooden throne and rows of benches divided from the main hall by a light railing; these, which had once been the seats of the King and nobility of Bohemia, were now decayed and broken, and behind the empty chair of state was thrust a Bourbon flag tied with the blue and white colours that the French carried in compliment to the Elector of Bavaria, whom they, for many intricate reasons, - some wise, and some foolish, and none just, - were seeking to place on the Austrian throne as Charles II. These officers, who were the unquestioning instruments of this policy of France, ceased talking presently and gathered round the degraded throne before which burnt a handful of charcoal over an iron tripod. Excerpt from Under Pressure At eight o'clock in the morning, the vast, cold, frescoed hall of the Palazzo Astalli was almost destitute of its usual occupants, consisting of two dignified butlers in black, and several body-servants, footmen and coachmen in green liveries. Besides these, a whole swarm of elderly dependants of the princely family, who had retired after thirty years of faithful and active service, with their well-deserved pensions, retained the rightful and honourable privilege of returning daily to the field of their past exploits, there to enjoy in unmolested peace a few hours of rest and conversation with the younger servants who had superseded them. They gathered round the great brass brazier which stood in the middle of the room, and every now and then threw the peel of an apple into the incandescent furnace of burning coals, to perfume the air. As in most of the typical Roman palaces this antechamber, destined for the sole use of the servants, and the largest room in the building, was decorated with frescoes of gods and goddesses of heroic size, who began their feats of valour or love on a level with simple mortals, and carried them on through the space usually occupied by two stories, round and about the double row of windows, onward and upward to the vaulted ceiling, where they terminated them in a grand Olympic apotheosis. Classical Political Economy addresses the question of what determines the social division of labour, the division of society into independent firms and industries and develops the theoretical implications of primitive accumulation. It also offers a significantly different interpretation of classical political economy, demonstrating that this school of thought supported the process of primitive accumulation. Classical political economy presents an imposing facade. For more than two centuries, the accepted doctrine dictates that a market generates forces that provide the most efficient method for organising production. This laissez faire approach is an ideology that gives capital absolute freedom of action, and yet called for intervention to coerce people to do things that they would not otherwise do. Classical political economy therefore encouraged policies that would hinder people's ability to produce for their own needs. Michael Perelman, however, in this innovative take on the subject, seeks to challenge the ideologies that would allow things to continue in this line unchecked.
