The recent, well-published cases of unethical behavior on the part of top-level executives in business as well as in government have given impetus to an increasing national concern with organizational or administrative ethics. Indeed, ethics has become the crucial focus in the study of administration. As one of the contributors to this work states: American management has lost its soul. Corrupt and barbaric managerial practices reported in the press and on television have eroded the public’s confidence in management leadership legitimacy. In this volume, ten scholars attack the issues of administrative ethics in ways they think are most important. Interestingly, most all of the essays return to the familiar theme that organizational ethics is dependent on personal ethics. In other words, we must become better people if we are to have better organizational governance. Good systems do not produce good people: rather good people produce good systems. The essays in this collection describe a variety of ideas about how contemporary management can incorporate ideas like personal integrity, mutual trust, and true concern for others as the basis of organizational life. In particular, they acknowledge that ethics, as a discipline, is changing. There is a growing rejection of the attempt to justify all in terms of some version of science. There is rather a return to the systematic thought of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle and to the work of the philosophers of the late Middle Ages. Answers to the problems of the ethics of administration will be found as we struggle—as the Founding Fathers did—with the classic and eternal issues of human morality in action.

"Ethics and Public Administration" refutes the arguments that administrative ethics cannot be studied in an empirical manner and that empirical analysis can deal only with the trivial issues in administrative ethics. Within a theoretical perspective, the authors qualify their findings and take care not to over-generalise results. The findings are relevant to the practice of public administration. Specific areas addressed include understanding public corruption, ethics as control, and ethics as administration and policy

There are few industries in which decisions are so intently scrutinized by millions of Canadians as the healthcare industry. Each day important decisions concerning the funding and delivery of healthcare are made far from the patient’s bed, in the offices of administrators and policy makers. These decisions can have considerable impact on the lives of patients and the practice of healthcare professionals. Whether you are a seasoned executive or an entry-level manager, Administration Ethics is intended to assist you in rendering effective and ethical decisions. Brimming with engaging examples, this text provides a practical guide to understanding the essential but often challenging areas of ethics theories, principles, codes, and rights, and insightfully illustrates how these concepts are integrated. Administration Ethics goes beyond academic debate and enters the daily practice of health administration. It examines the psychology of decision making, revealing how we sometimes make well-intentioned, but unethical decisions. Each chapter includes illustrative cases pertinent to the ethical management and policy decisions required of healthcare administrators. Featuring a new, user-friendly decision model and designed specifically with the Canadian healthcare system in mind, this volume will be an indispensable resource for both current and future healthcare administrators in Canada.

After years of languishing in the long shadow of «values», its 1960s-era substitute, public discussion and debate about virtues, vices, character, and ethics are occupying center stage once again. This book joins that debate in a way that is both practical and useful to undergraduate and graduate students who are being introduced to the full breadth of public administration in introductory courses, or specialized ones in administrative ethics. Intended as a supplement to major ethics texts, this book will help readers develop a thorough understanding of the principles of ethics so they will come away with a deeper appreciation of the challenges and complexities involved in negotiating the ethical dilemmas facing administrators in a twenty-first century democratic republic.
