This authoritative account of the granulomatous disorders provides a comprehensive overview of this complex group of diseases. Collectively, these disorders can present a bewildering array of symptoms, affecting all the body systems. This volume takes full account of recent advances in our knowledge of the molecular biology and immunology of these disorders, and casts fresh light on their diagnosis and treatment. This timely publication is organised to include chapters focused on causative agents and those addressing affected body systems. Highly illustrated throughout, including numerous colour plates, it encompasses and integrates the very latest science, pathology and practical clinical advice. Compiled by international authorities with chapters which combine the expertise of both a pathologist and clinician, it is sure to become an essential source of reference for a very wide readership including infectious disease specialists, immunologists, pathologists, radiologists, ophthalmologists and general physicians.

Toxocara is a parasitic helminth worm which continues to stimulate both public concern and scientific interest. Toxocara canis and T.cati, the most studied species, are gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and cats and their eggs can contaminate the environment, thus exposing humans and other mammals and birds to infection. Many questions remain unanswered about the host-parasite relationship, its epidemiology and public health significance. Veterinarians and clinicians are interested in its importance as a zoonosis. The parasite's capacity to cause ocular disease is of concern to ophthalmologists, while its propensity to stimulate allergic manifestations is of interest to allergologists, dermatologists and respiratory medicine specialists. Furthermore Toxocara provides a unique model system to explore questions in parasite biology. This book provides a comprehensive review of Toxocara and the disease it causes known as toxocariasis.

In 1992 a Concerted Action Programme (CAP) was initiated by Peter Sijmons with the purpose of intensifying collaborations between 16 European laboratories working on plant-parasitic nematodes. The four-year programme entitled Resistance Mechanisms Against Plant-Parasitic Nematodes focused on molecular aspects of the interaction between sedentary nematodes and plants on the model system Arabidopsis and on novel resistance strategies. Funding was provided mainly for exchange visits between collaborating laboratories and for the organization of annual meetings. During the last annual meeting which was held in May 1996 in Toledo, Spain, Carmen Fenoll initiated the production of this volume.
