His great aim has been to present all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ and his gospel, a book of thoughts on the Psalms, derived directly from a truthful exposi tion of the Psalms themselves. He has laboured to get at the mind of the Spirit in the psalm, and in every part of the psalm, and having, as he hoped. Excerpt from The Parochial Psalmist, or a Selection of Psalms and Hymns, Set to Appropriate Tunes, Arranged for Four Voices: Together With Chants, Sanctuses and Responses Windsor, Bavaria, Savoy, Abbey Tune, Nayland, Hamburg, Berlin, St. Mark's, Leyden. The majority Of these were composed in the 16th and 17th centuries, and are deservedly admired many of them were harmonized by Morley, Allison, Ravenscroft, and other great masters; but some of them are of a still earlier date. The most sublime Psalm Tunes are the most ancient we have.-l' It will be remarked in the above-mentioned tunes, that for the most part, there is a separate note for every syllable; this seems necessary for the distinct articulation of the words. Where several notes are sung to the same syllable, it is difficult, if not impossible, for those who sing, distinctly to articulate the words, or for those who listen to understand them hence, as Dr. Crotch remarks.
