Partnership Within Hierarchy

Examines intra-alliance politics between the United States, Japan, and South Korea. In an age of increasingly complex security situations around the world, it is essential that students and practitioners understand alliances and minilateral security mechanisms. Partnership within Hierarchy examines, in depth, the troubled evolution of theUS–Japan–South Korea security triangle from the Cold War period to the present time. Referencing a voluminous amount of declassified documents in three different languages, Sung Chull Kim, through six case studies, delves into the common questions arising in different historical periods, such as who should pay costs, what to commit, and why. Burden sharing and commitment, Kim shows, emerged as the main subject of competing expectations and disagreements arising between the capable middle power Japan and the weak power South Korea. Kim details how the dominant power, the United States, has controlled the red lines and intervened in the disputes, the result of which is in most instances a balancing effect for the triangle. In this vein, he persuasively accounts for why historical disputes between Japan and South Korea, which submerged during the Cold War, reverberate today when asymmetry between the two is substantially balanced. Sung Chull Kim is Humanities Korea Professor at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University and the author of North Korea under Kim Jong Il: From Consolidation to Systemic Dissonance, also published by SUNY Press.

Accountancy is an elite profession, wielding its influence in every step we take in business and political life, from takeover to bankruptcies and from Brexit to war: we need accountants to help us see the bigger picture and to enable us to trust one another in public life. But for much of the profession's history, women were excluded from it and, while we have seen great advances in women's access to the profession, women remain significantly underrepresented at the top of the hierarchy and amid partnership ranks across the industry and globally. Importantly, there are noteworthy differences in the severity of this underrepresentation across national borders which remain underexplored. Gendered Hierarchies of Dependency considers this underrepresentation of women at partnership level cross-nationally and through a feminist lens, analysing interviews with female partners in Germany and the United Kingdom. In doing so, Kokot-Blamey innovatively merges insights from accountancy and organization studies, political economy, and the feminist ethics of care literature to contribute to contemporary debates about women at work, neoliberalism and the capitalist fiction of the autonomous self. Beyond career advancement to partnership, Kokot-Blamey examines several timely issues such as the persistence of discrimination and sexism at work, motherhood, and weathering recessions and economic crises in accountancy. Revealing important insights into the day-to-day working and private lives of modern elites, this book shows how hierarchies are negotiated differently across borders, but that the outcomes are always gendered.

China’s vision for international order is a matter of great global interest. This book analyses China’s vision for foreign policy and how it is seeking to achieve its goals with its immediate neighbours. The book provides a historically informed account by examining the legacy of China’s imperial past and traditional political philosophy, giving insights into the country’s view of its place in today’s world. It argues that China today sees the maintenance of order as its own responsibility and that it believes this order needs to attribute different roles to ‘small’ and ‘big’ states to ensure stability.
