Paul S Anthropological Terms In The Light Of Discourse Analysis

Scholars generally apply the New Testament Greek terms sōma 'body', pneuma 'spirit', psychē 'soul', and kardia 'heart' to the individual. But what is Paul is referring to with these terms? Dr Chen explores the whole picture. He illustrates that these terms carry social and corporate dimensions, focusing on community or communal unity, thus emphasising the place of the human person within the ecclesial community. Chen's helpful contribution to our understanding of Paul continues in the growing tradition of Moisés Silva, David Black, Stanley Porter, Joel Green, and others, using discourse linguistic principles to refine our understanding of biblical texts. His integrated investigation of the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features of Paul's anthropological terms in the context of the entire epistles in which they are used rightly challenges us to rethink all that Paul is referring to with these terms--which in turn will challenge us to rethink Paul's understanding of the Church and, indeed, of the entire Gospel message. One can hardly ignore the significance of suffering in Paul’s letters. In this book, the author claims that modern western biblical scholarship, greatly influenced by extreme individualism, has not paid due attention to the corporate dimension of Pauline anthropoiogy. It investigates the following elements in Paul's letters in the light of his usage and background: (1) Paul's in Christ formula, (2) his comparison and contrast of Adam and Christ, (3) his concept of the church as the body of Christ and (4) as the temple, house, and building of God, and (5) his understanding of the sexual union as one flesh. The author insists that these elements, closely interwoven in concept and realistic in expression, indicate that Paul understands the risen Christ as a corporate person in whom all believers are included and the church as a corporate solidarity inclusive of both Christ and believers. Underlying this concept is, the author argues, Paul's assumption of the corporate solidarity of human existence. Paul views man not only as an individual but also as a corporate person whose existence extends in certain respects beyond his individual being to form corporate solidarity with others. This view of man both as an individual and corporate person, the author concludes, has significant implications for the rest of Pauline theology, particularly for his Christology, ecclesiology, and eschatology.

This book will attempt to achieve a constructive and positive correla tion between mythic-symbolic language and philosophical anthropolo gy. It is intended as a reflection on the philosophical accomplishment of Paul Ricoeur. The term mythic-symbolic language in this context means the language of the multivalent symbol given in the myth with its psychological and poetic counterparts. The term symbol is not con ceived as an abstract sign as it is used in symbolic logic, but rather as a concrete phenomenon - religious, psychological, and poetic. The task inherent in this correlation is monumental when one considers the dual dilemma of problematic and possibility which is at its heart. The prob lematic arises out of the apparent difficulty presented by the so-called challenge of modernity which seems to require the elimination of my thic-symbolic language as an intelligible mode of communication. Mythic-symbolic language is sometimes eliminated because in a world molded by abstract conceptualizations conceptUalizations of science, such a language is thought to be unintelligible. The claim is that its "primitive" explana tions have been transcended by our modernity. Others believe that the problem of mythic-symbolic language is the problem of the myth. If the mythic forms of language could be eliminated, the truth of such language could be preserved through its translation into an intelligible mode of discourse. The problematic is heightened further by the relation of consider ations of language to philosophical anthropology.
