Peter Penguin sometimes felt jealous that his friends seemed to have cooler toys and games than him. Edgar Elephant just got a new skateboard, Francine Flamingo always had the newest sneakers, and Henry Hamster had a trampoline! Peter Penguin had an old skateboard, he had the same pair of shoes from the year before, and his backyard wasn't even big enough to fit a trampoline. "Hey mom," said Peter one day, "I saw these really cool sneakers that are yellow and navy blue checkered and I really want them." "Do your shoes still fit?" She asked. "Yes." "Are there any holes in them?" "No." "Are they comfortable?" "Yes." "Then why do you need a new pair? Money doesn't grow on trees, Peter." How will Peter Penguin get the new sneakers he wants? Six short, fun and interesting stories with lessons on: Respect Diversity Patience Kindness Honesty Forgiveness Teamwork We once knew a beautiful Labrador Retriever named Karma. "Pecky is a very peculiar penguin..." Set in an arctic landscape, this story follows Pecky who is a penguin who is tall and thin, does not like to swim, and wears glasses. He is searching for a new friend before starting back to school. He finds the most unlikely friend in Peter the Polar Bear. They also become friends with Fanny the Arctic Fox, Sammy the Seal, and Petunia the Penguin at the local park, and decide they would like to go swimming. Where they want to go "Pinnacle Point", has been forbidden by their parents as being too dangerous. Not wanting to appear to be afraid or to be the only one not to go, they all agree to meet at the beach. Peter accidentally tells the secret to his mom and she informs the other parents. At the beach the friends are swimming when they find they are being followed by a nasty looking shark who wants to eat them. The parents show up just in time to save their little ones by fighting off the shark. The young friends learn a valuable lesson from their adventure. This story deals with the concept of making friends between various species and unique personalities. Peer pressure and the potential dangers from it are examined, and the young reader learns that parents issue warnings for good reasons. Ultimately, the young characters learn that decisions should not be based on dares or name calling. Beautifully detailed illustrations tell the story as well as the text, which makes this book ideal for ages 4 and up. This book will make a perfect read-aloud addition to a child's library that will be enjoyed by children an adults alike.
