Perspectives On Contemporary Printmaking

This anthology, the first of its kind, presents thirty-two texts on contemporary prints and printmaking written from the mid-1980s to the present by authors from across the world. The texts range from history and criticism to creative writing. More than a general survey, they provide a critical topography of artistic printmaking during the period. The book is directed at an audience of international stakeholders in the field of contemporary print, printmaking and printmedia, including art students, practising artists, museum curators, critics, educationalists, print publishers and print scholars. Artists featured include David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst, Nanvy Spero, Roni Horn, Masami Teraoka, Kara Walker, Oscar Munos, Willie Cole, Banksy and the Brooklyn-based Faile Collective. The work of influential artists in the field throughout history is also included, such as Rembrandt, Goya, Degas, Picasso, Paula Rego, and George Baselitz, to show the effect their work has had on a younger generation of artists. AUTHOR: Paul Coldwell is an artist, curator and Professor of Fine Art at the University of the Arts, London. His own practice includes prints, book works, sculptures and installations and he has exhibited widely with solo shows at The Eagle Gallery, Freud Museum, Arthouse Dublin, The London Print Studio, and Queens Gallery, Delhi. He has published writings on a number of printmakers including, Morandi, Ardizzone and Rego, with whom he worked with on all her etchings between 1986- 2005 including the Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan, Pendle Witches, and the Children's Crusade.

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full-color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition that has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times. Paper Politics presents a breathtaking tour of the many modalities of printing by hand: relief, intaglio, lithography, serigraph, collagraph, monotype, and photography. In addition to these techniques, included are more traditional media used to convey political thought, finely crafted stencils and silk-screens intended for wheat pasting in the street. This volume makes available, in English, most of the essays written to accompany the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s exhibition of the same name. Not included, are the essays by Gisela Hoffman, Bernadette Driscoll and Elizabeth McLuhan and the exhibition catalogue section which appeared in the original German publication. This book provides an overview of the evolution of contemporary Native Canadian art.
