Megaplasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements in the size range of 100 kb and larger. They are found in physiologically and phylogenetically diverse groups of bacteria and archaea. By definition, megaplasmids are not essential for the viability of their hosts under all growth conditions, but paradoxically many megaplasmids carry the genetic information for the defining and characteristic traits of the organism in which they reside. Microbial Megaplasmids reviews our knowledge of the extensively studied representatives, such as the catabolic plasmids of the pseudomonads, the rhizobial Sym plasmids, the Ti plasmids of the genus Agrobacterium and the giant enterobacterial virulence plasmids. It also presents snapshots of more recently discovered megaplasmids. The contribution of megaplasmids to the biology of their hosts is described, highlighting the interactions between megaplasmid and chromosomal genes.

Proceedings from the International Symposium on Antibiotic Resistance 1979, the fourth volume in the series of material edited from the Smolenice symposium, is a continuation in the tradition of communicating new scientific results on a currently important and interesting problem. It concerns not only human and veterinary medicine and practice, but also such important fields of contemporary biology as molecular biology and genetics. Indeed, in both these disciplines, we have recently noted a strong and dynamic de velopment of scientific knowledge directed toward such outgrowths of the study of plasmids as gene manipulations, transposons, and transposition, as well as the evolution of plasmids in general. Because of a very real global development of resistance to the newest antibiotics, and the active participation of experts from medical science and practice, it was reasonable to separate the medical part of the program from the theoretical one. Consequently, priorities of the fourth symposium were transposons and the transposition of resistance of to antibiotics, with their serious impact on epidemiology, the resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, that is becoming a prominent nosocomial pathogen, the ecology and epidemiology ofR plasmids, and, last though not least, the computer-assisted surveillance of resistance to antibiotics.

Bridging these techniques forms the foundation of individual-based ecology of microbes (µIBE). µIBE has elucidated genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity that has important consequences for a number of human interests, including antibiotic or biocide resistance, the productivity and stability of industrial fermentations, the efficacy of food preservatives, and the potential of pathogens to cause disease. Individual-based models can help us to understand how these sets of traits of individual microbes influence the above. This eBook compiles all publications from a recent Research Topic in Frontiers in Microbiology. It features recent research where individual observational and/or modelling techniques are applied to gain unique insights into the ecology of microorganisms. This book resulted from presentations at an international conference on bacterial p1asmids held January 5-9, 1981 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This was the first meeting of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The meeting place was selected for its relaxed and comfortable climate, conducive to interactions among participants. More importantly the locale facilitated the participation of nearby Latin American clinical and research scientists who deal directly with the health manifestations of pathogenic p1asmids. Diseases and socio-economic practices of developing countries exist in the Dominican Republic whose scientific community could directly benefit from having the meeting there. The book includes the talks as well as extended abstracts of poster presentations from the meeting. This combination, which provides readers with reviews as well as recent findings, captures the full scientific exchange which took place during the 5-day meeting. As one indication of pathogenicity related to p1asmids, the conferees were surveyed for gastro-intestina1 problems during and after their stay in the Dominican Republic. The results are summarized at the end of this book.
